City backpedals on weekend swine flu vaccinations meant for middle school and high school students

Any school kid who goes to a city clinic will get the swine flu vaccine – and everyone else will be evaluated on a “case-by-case basis,” health officials said Tuesday. The Health Department backpedaled a day after telling the Daily News middle and high school students would not get priority over the general public at special swine flu vaccination clinics opening next month. A spokeswoman said Monday the city “won’t turn anyone away” at the clinics, but the department changed its tune on Tuesday. “Weekend vaccine clinics for middle-school and high-school students will be held in each borough starting Nov. 7. [The clinics] are for students, not the public,” said department spokeswoman Jessica Scaperotti. “If an at-risk adult comes to a weekend [clinic] – and there are no lines – staff will determine if that individual will receive a vaccine on a case-by-case basis,” Scaperotti said. Swine flu vaccine is recommended for children and young adults between the ages of 6 months to 24 years, pregnant women and people with chronic health conditions, such as asthma, that put them at a higher risk of complications should they get the bug.
