There could be a surge in the number of convicted terrorists released from prison by the end of the year. A Guardian analysis of figures released by the Sentencing Council reveal that more than 40% of sentences for terrorism in the last decade will have been served by the end of the year. Islamist preacher Anjem Choudary will be eligible for parole in 2018, having been jailed in 2016 for drumming up support for Islamic State. It comes as the Home Secretary, Sajid Javid, prepares to outline the Government’s new blueprint for tackling terror. MI5 and police will be alerted to suspicious purchases more quickly and Javid will promise to work more closely with businesses to eradicate the “safe spaces” that are exploited by violent extremists. At a speech on Monday he is expected say: “That includes faster alerts for suspicious purchases, improving security at crowded places across the UK, and reducing the vulnerability of our critical infrastructure.” Ministers want firms to raise the alarm as quickly as possible if they have evidence of unusual transactions – such as someone stockpiling large amounts of chemicals or acting suspiciously when hiring a vehicle.
