The United States does not recognize Hunterdon County as an American Viticultural Area by the federal government, according to Tom Cosentino, executive director of the Garden State Wine Growers Association.Not yet, at least.As Cosentino points out, that could change.An AVA is a wine grape-growing region with specific geographic or climactic features that distinguish it from surrounding areas. “Hunterdon County is really emerging as a great wine region in New Jersey,” Cosentino said. “And while Hunterdon is not an AVA … I can eventually see it as one.” Hunterdon County could become an AVA because of the explosive success of the viticulture and winery industry in New Jersey, currently home to 50 wineries.
