Children’s care system ‘in crisis’ as cases hit 10-year high amid ‘unprecedented demand’

The children’s care system is in crisis after cases hit a 10-year high amid “unprecedented” and “unsustainable” demand, the government has been warned. The children’s commissioner has urged ministers to launch an independent review after new figures revealed the number of youngsters in care has soared by more than a quarter over the last decade. Official data collated by the Local Government Association (LGA) show there were 78,150 children in care in England at the end of March 2019. Anne Longfield, the children’s commissioner for England, said the government made a manifesto commitment to review the children’s care system and it “needs to be launched as soon as possible”.
