Acerbic border policies during the administration of President Donald J. Trump have spurred scenarios where migrant children are separated by their parents. As late as last month, CNN reported that the Justice Department and lawyers for the American Civil Liberties Union were unable to reach the parents of 545 children who were separated from their families while coming into the U.S. between 2017 and 2018. The notion is that hundreds of parents may also have been deported without their children.
