OTTAWA—This is what brawls look like on the top court bench. Judges don’t throw off their robes and come to blows. What they do — judicial jousting — is more subtle. Split rulings. Lengthy dissenting opinions. Constitutional decisions that see judges split not only into two groups, but sometimes going three or four different ways. Wary court watchers are now wondering if the Supreme Court of Canada is as divided or as polarized as the rest of us. Since becoming prime minister in 2015, Justin Trudeau has named three new judges to the country’s top court, and elevated Justice Richard Wagner to the post of Chief Justice. In that time, the nine-member Supreme Court of Canada has turned into an unruly crew. Outwardly, they are friendly, collegial and professional. But a look at their rulings — as legal scholars and lawyers are increasingly pointing out — shows a judicial team “of equals” that is struggling to find its voice as Canada’s top court. When the latest rookie, … [Read more...] about Judicial jousting emerges at Supreme Court of Canada

Source: US News & World Report My cousin hates Andrew Cuomo. Thinks he’s an arrogant bully . So Michael is taking particular delight in the Governor’s recent fall from grace amidst accusations of sexual harassment and allegations that he hid the number of people who died of covid in nursing homes to make himself look better. It’s easy to judge Michael’s reaction as ungracious, emblematic of the polarized times we live in. What kind of person takes pleasure from another’s pain? But then I remember: didn’t I delight in how devastated Donald Trump must have felt with his electoral defeat, and before that with the karma that came from his getting Covid after minimizing the coronavirus ’s importance? All of a sudden I feel a little dizzy on my high horse. Between partisan politics , social media and an environment in which more people are coming forward with accusations against public figures, the times are ripe for schadenfreude – the experience of taking pleasure … [Read more...] about What Do Cuomo and Trump Have in Common?
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is coming under increasing pressure after two more women publicly accused him of being physically inappropriate with them. The claims bring the total of women who have spoken out against Cuomo to five, since Lindsey Boylan first accused the 63-year-old of creating a culture of "sexual harassment and bullying" within his team. Cuomo faces an independent investigation into the harassment allegations. New York state attorney general, Letitia James, will lead the probe into the claims outlined below. The governor has denied the allegations against him. In a statement released last week Cuomo conceded some of his words may "have been misinterpreted as an unwanted flirtation. To the extent anyone felt that way, I am truly sorry about that." Speaking about on Wednesday, he said: "You know, my usual custom is to kiss and to hug and make that gesture. I understand that sensitivities have changed and behavior has changed, and I get it. "And I'm … [Read more...] about What Andrew Cuomo’s Five Accusers Have Said About His Alleged Sexual Misconduct
I always walk by this particular house, but until one afternoon a couple of weeks ago, I had never seen anyone there. On that afternoon, as I was walking by, a small voice shouted, “You wanna see my millipede?” With that, he ran toward me as fast as a 5-year-old carrying a millipede on an envelope can go. Arriving at his internally programmed 6-foot radius, he carefully held the envelope forward so I could get a good look. I’m not sure why showing me this tiny treasure was a top priority, but I’m glad that it was. He assured me that the creature was not venomous and we both marveled at the multi-legged arthropod creeping along the back of an envelope. We proceeded to have the nicest chat while his mother stood watching from a few yards away. He told me his name was Evan, and I invited him to come see the river from my backyard and pick up a book from my Little Free Library in front of my home, just down the street and around the corner. He asked me my name, and we talked … [Read more...] about Everyone needs at least one real-life 5-year-old friend
It’s shaping up as one of the most intriguing guests lists of the year: which family members will be invited to celebrate Rupert Murdoch’s upcoming 90th birthday with the billionaire expat media mogul? And even more tantalising, given the endless Machiavellian machinations within the all-powerful family , is the prospect of who will actually show up. Will his son James Murdoch be there? James and his wife Kathryn publicly cast shade on Rupert in January with stinging criticism of one of his most precious personal possessions - his media empire . However I have been assured by well-placed sources that they were very much involved in top secret plans to mark the patriarch’s birthday milestone.
