Julianne Hough Addresses Her & Gabrielle Union’s ‘America’s Got Talent’ Exits

December 5, 2019 by

Julianne Hough is breaking her silence on her and Gabrielle Union’s sudden departures from America’s Got Talent. In an appearance on Today‘s third hour Thursday, Hough did not respond directly when asked by host Craig Melvin what her own experience was as a judge on NBC’s hit summer competition series. “I commend Gabrielle for speaking her truth and starting a conversation,” said the Dancing With The Stars judge, who is set to star with her brother Derek in two NBC Christmas specials. “I’m also really proud of NBC as well for showing up and starting a narrative, and that’s what’s going to change the workplace and the paradigm that we’ve been working in for many, many years, and it’s shifting, and I think that’s really, really exciting.” Hough’s comments refer to a sit-down Wednesday between NBC and Union to address her departure and to look at ways to improve the culture and atmosphere on … [Read more...] about Julianne Hough Addresses Her & Gabrielle Union’s ‘America’s Got Talent’ Exits

Serco: the company that is running Britain

July 29, 2013 by

In May this year, a huge company listed on the London Stock Exchange found itself in the midst of controversy about a prison it runs for the government – Thameside, a newly built jail next to Belmarsh, in south-east London. A report by Her Majesty's Inspectorate found that 60% of its inmates were locked up all day, and there were only "vague plans to restore the prison to normality". The prison campaign group the Howard League for Penal Reform talked about conditions that were "truly alarming". Two months later, the same company was the subject of a high- profile report published by the House Of Commons public accounts committee, prompted by the work of Guardian journalist Felicity Lawrence. This time, attention was focused on how it was managing out-of-hours GP services in Cornwall, and massive failings that had first surfaced two years before. Again, the verdict was damning: data had been falsified, national standards had not been met, there was a culture of "lying and … [Read more...] about Serco: the company that is running Britain

Revealed: How universal credit is fuelling Britain’s homelessness crisis

October 27, 2018 by

Government welfare reforms are fuelling a rise in homelessness in towns and cities across the country, an Observer investigation has found. Interviews with homelessness charities across England reveal a support system in crisis as the rollout of universal credit and freezes to local housing allowance rates put even basic accommodation beyond the means of many. One shelter said universal credit was a factor in a third of its clients ending up in its care. The findings put more pressure on the chancellor, Philip Hammond, as he prepares to unveil Monday’s budget. On Saturday night, Tory and DUP rebels threatening to force the government into a rethink over universal credit claimed that they had secured a £1bn injection for the programme. Last week, the Commons public accounts committee said universal credit was responsible for increased debt, rent arrears and food bank use. But it has also emerged that it is a significant contributor to both “invisible” homelessness … [Read more...] about Revealed: How universal credit is fuelling Britain’s homelessness crisis
