SINGAPORE: A maintenance employee of a swimming school in Jurong East discarded chlorine powder into a sewer on Friday (Mar 5), "unknowingly" causing a chemical reaction, said the founder of the school. The chemical reaction "ignited a flare" and caused an "alarming sound", Mr Tan Jian Yong, the founder of Happy Fish Swim School, said in a Facebook post on Saturday. There were no students at the premises at the time of the incident, he said. No injuries were reported, and the maintenance keeper was taken to the hospital for a check-up, he added. "We are working closely with authorities as we recognise our responsibility here — to safeguard further precautionary steps to ensure the safety of our staff, students and the members of public," said Mr Tan. WHAT HAPPENED? Mr Tan said the incident happened at about 8.30pm at one of the school's branches in Jurong East. Mr Tan said the school had hired a waste management company after noticing a strong smell from the … [Read more...] about Chlorine powder discarded into sewer by swimming school in Jurong East

Loud bang as chlorine powder poured into public sewers by Jurong East swimming school
SINGAPORE - Residents were startled by a loud bang after 45kg of chlorine powder was poured into the public sewers by a swimming school. A maintenance keeper at the site in Jurong East had discarded it without realising it would cause a reaction. The Happy Fish Swim School worker acted at about 8.30pm on Friday (March 5), after noticing a strong smell from the chlorine drum, which had been in contact with moist air. No injuries or damage were reported. School founder Tan Jian Yong said the maintenance keeper "took the initiative to discard the chlorine powder into the sewage without knowing that it will cause issues". He wrote on Facebook: "Chlorine is very reactive to germs, bacteria and other chemical compounds which can be found in general sewers. As a result, it inevitably caused a chemical reaction. A loud sound alarmed neighbouring residents." Mr Tan said the school's operations were unaffected and classes would run safely as normal. He added that the maintenance keeper … [Read more...] about Loud bang as chlorine powder poured into public sewers by Jurong East swimming school
Supalai Resort to install swim dock
PHUKET CITY: The provincial committee on waterways has approved a request by Best Western Premier Supalai Resort & Spa in Pa Khlok to construct a 200-meter floating dock to give resort guests access to the sea. The committee, chaired by Phuket Vice-Governor Worapoj Ratthasima, met at Phuket Provincial Hall on August 7 to discuss the license application. Its members include representatives from provincial offices of Public Works and Planning, Fisheries, Marine Transport, Natural Resources and Environment. Nalinee Thongtham of the Phuket Marine Biological Center was the only committee member to express reservations about the 2m-wide plastic pier, which the resort says is only intended for swimmers and not as a berthing site for watercraft. Worrying about the effect on coral in the area, Khun Nalinee asked the committee if the length of the dock could be limited to 150 meters. She noted that local people had protested about other pier projects in the Ao Por area. In the … [Read more...] about Supalai Resort to install swim dock
