BBC must end threat of prosecuting over 75s for not paying licence fee, say peers
THE BBC must end the threat of prosecuting over 75s for not paying their licence fee for good, a cross-party group of 28 peers told the corporation’s boss. The threats by TV Licensing has created unacceptable stress among Britain’s eldest citizens which Beeb big wig Tim Davie must solve, they added. It comes as culture minister John Whittingdale today faces MPs questions over the Government’s approach to the TV licence fee. The letter said: “There is no moral justification for sending waves of threatening letters to people like 96 year old Frank Ashleigh who served this country by landing a glider behind enemy lines in Arnhem in 1944. “The BBC has many friends who want it to survive but the treatment of the over 75s is undermining that goodwill.” The peers insisted much more needs to be done in order to mitigate the stress to the elderly, including a pledge to never prosecute any over 75s for a licence fee . And they rejected any ideas of means testing. … [Read more...] about BBC must end threat of prosecuting over 75s for not paying licence fee, say peers
COVID-19 aviation support package will help industry ride out crisis: Analysts
SINGAPORE: Analysts have welcomed the S$750 million of support set aside by the Government for the aviation sector, noting that it will help the industry recover more quickly from the blow dealt to it by COVID-19. On Thursday (Mar 26), Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat announced a S$48.4 billion package - up to S$17 billion of which will be drawn from past reserves - to protect jobs and support the economy in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak. More than S$750 million will go to schemes aimed at supporting Singapore’s aviation sector, which employs more than 190,00 people and contributes more than 5 per cent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP). More than S$400 million of that money will go to a jobs scheme, which will see the Government pay up to 75 per cent of the first S$4,600 of a worker’s monthly wages. The other S$350 million will be for an enhanced aviation support package aimed at providing relief to businesses in the aviation sector. This will help … [Read more...] about COVID-19 aviation support package will help industry ride out crisis: Analysts
Scoot temporarily suspends flights to 49 destinations amid COVID-19 outbreak
SINGAPORE: Scoot will “temporarily suspend” flights to 49 destinations as countries tighten border restrictions amid the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak. In an announcement on its website , Scoot listed out the affected routes, with many of the flights between Singapore and China. Outside of Asia, Scoot flights to Greece and Germany are also affected. The suspension of some routes started on Friday (Mar 20). On Monday morning, parent company Singapore Airlines (SIA) said Scoot would suspend most of its network, and would ground 47 of its fleet of 49 planes. SIA will also be cutting 96 per cent of its capacity, grounding 138 of 147 planes. The company called it the "greatest challenge that the SIA Group has faced in its existence". "The SIA Group diversified its network and set up Scoot to spread its risks and cater to a wide range of passenger and market segments," the statement read. "However, without a domestic segment, the group’s airlines become more vulnerable when … [Read more...] about Scoot temporarily suspends flights to 49 destinations amid COVID-19 outbreak
