Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Need further proof that the country remains deeply divided politically and likely shows no sign of healing anytime soon? Cue the birthday bashlash for two controversial figures. Monday – June 14 – marked the birthdays of both former President Donald Trump and Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara. A shared birthday was certainly the only thing these men had in common, at least until today. Well wishes were shared on social media, and that was followed by posts that included outright contempt and condemnation for each. It has become abundantly clear that Trump is now as inflammatory a figure as Guevara and possibly even more so when it comes to opinions on social media. It was also apparent that it is impossible to even post anything about either man without stirring up the masses on Twitter. The "Best President" The birthday of former President Donald Trump was both marked and mocked, which was certainly to be expected … [Read more...] about Social Media Says Happy Birthday Donald Trump And Che Guevara

In the days since the Monday meeting in Helsinki, there’s been an understandable frenzy over President Trump’s post-summit press conference, given that he sided with the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, over his own intelligence agencies on the subject of Russia’s 2016 election interference, ranted about his Electoral College victory, blamed the United States for bad relations with Russia, and called the special prosecutor investigating his alleged collusion a “disgrace to our country” as a smirking Putin looked on. But the real scandal of Helsinki may be only just emerging. On Thursday, Putin gave a public address to Russian diplomats in which he claimed that specific “useful agreements” were reached with Trump in their one-on-one meeting at the summit, a private meeting that Trump himself insisted on. Putin’s announcement came a day after his Ambassador to Washington, Anatoly Antonov, said that Trump had made “important verbal agreements” with Putin on arms control and other … [Read more...] about “No Way to Run a Superpower”: The Trump-Putin Summit and the Death of American Foreign Policy
MIAMI — No one had to tell Ron DeSantis that his mock debates had bordered on disastrous. His answers rambled. He seemed uninspired. By the time he got to the greenroom of the biggest political stage of his career, a Republican primary debate for Florida governor in June 2018, he had made a risky decision. “I thought about everything we did in debate practice,” his campaign manager, Brad Herold, recalled Mr. DeSantis telling him. “I’m going to throw it out and do my own thing.” At the debate’s start, the audience applauded louder for his better-known opponent, Adam Putnam. By its end — after he had cast Mr. Putnam as a vestige of old Republicanism and delivered a rat-a-tat of one-liners — Mr. DeSantis had taken command of the crowd. Nearly three years and a pandemic later, Mr. DeSantis’s inclination to keep his own counsel and drive hard at reopening Florida has made him perhaps the most recognizable Republican governor in the country and a favorite of the party … [Read more...] about Could Ron DeSantis Be Trump’s G.O.P. Heir? He’s Certainly Trying.
WASHINGTON — The words of the 14th Amendment are plain, and the scholarly and judicial consensus about what they mean is nearly uniform: Children born in the United States automatically become citizens of the United States. In an interview released Tuesday , President Trump proposed a different reading of the amendment, one he said denies birthright citizenship to the children of undocumented immigrants. Mr. Trump said he was preparing to issue an executive order to that end. The statement sounded more like a political stunt than a reasoned legal argument, and its timing, coming a week before the midterm elections, was suspect. Nor was it clear what the executive order would say, or how it could change the meaning of the Constitution. But there was little question that any action by Mr. Trump to try to alter birthright citizenship would be met with immediate legal challenges. “The president cannot erase the Constitution with an executive order, and the 14th Amendment’s … [Read more...] about Trump’s Birthright Citizenship Proposal Is at Odds With Legal Consensus
