The subculture of Selena Quintanilla Pérez super-fandom, or Selenidad , was born out of grief. After the Queen of Tejano music was murdered on March 31st, 1995 — shot once in the back by the president of her fan club, Yolanda Saldivar — her Mexican American fans mourned her. For some it was like a close relative had been assassinated and an untouchable, living religious diva was extinguished before she could perform her miracles. When Dreaming of You , her first English-language album, was released posthumously that summer, it sold over 175,000 copies in a single day and eventually over 3 million copies. In her home state of Texas, they painted large murals of her, erected a statue, named a park in her honor and made her Corpus Christi music studio into a museum. All these decades later, fans still put her photos up on their Día De Muertos ofrendas and dress up in her most famous outfits on the anniversary of her death. Dozens of Taiwanese Star Wars fans gathered on the top floor of the nation’s tallest building Tuesday to salute their favorite movie, while stressing the importance of wearing face masks to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Fans dressed in full Star Wars costumes held mock lightsaber battles and posed for pictures on the 89th floor of the Taipei 101 financial building for what has become an annual observance of what has become known as international Star Wars Day. Organizer of the event Makoto Tsai told reporters he also wanted the "opportunity to introduce interesting places of Taiwan to the world,” because International Star Wars Day, “is an event watched by all the Star Wars fans in the world." Tsai said their annual event was cancelled last year because the pandemic was at its worst in Taiwan. He said while COVID-19 is largely contained in Taiwan, he is aware that much of the world is continuing to struggle with it. He said he wanted to use his Taiwan gathering to show … [Read more...] about Taiwan Star Wars Fans Celebrate Unofficial Holiday Atop Nation’s Tallest Building
For this writer, the quintessential moment of the 2018 Newport Jazz Festival came in transit. A quick stroll on Saturday afternoon took me from the main stage, where Laurie Anderson was wrapping up a set of luminous, exploratory string-trio free improv, to one of the smaller tents, where octogenarian Memphis piano master Harold Mabern, saxophonist Eric Alexander & Co. were busy muscling through a set of exquisite old-school hardbop. The transition was disorienting in the best way possible — an illustration of just how broad this legendary fest’s concept of jazz still is. Thanks to its upscale beach-town setting, the Rhode Island festival might still have an air of old-money gentility. But on the ground, the event feels populist and homegrown, thanks to hand-painted welcome signs (“We’re all here together and it’s festival time!”), a sea of lawn chairs and coolers, and of course the legendary main-stage view of the water, where a whole other audience can be seen taking in the … [Read more...] about Newport Jazz Festival 2018: 14 Best Things We Saw
