THE “publish-or-perish” system and “predatory” publishing are perhaps among the most talked about but poorly understood areas of contemporary scholarly life. On one hand, scholars and scientists are increasingly being pressured by their employers to generate publications; on the other, few succeed when it comes to academic publishing. The lack of research and writing skills, ignorance of which journals are legitimate, and insufficient monitoring and regulation are factors leading to the proliferation of predatory publishers in recent years. Such publishers use or publish false or misleading information, deviate from ethical editorial and publication practices, lack transparency, and/or use aggressive and indiscriminate solicitation practices. As shown by Grudniewicz and colleagues (2019), and Machá ek and Srholec (2021) in Nature and Scientometrics, respectively, even the very prominent databases such as Scopus have been penetrated by predatory journals. President Biden Joe Biden Tulane adds Hunter Biden as guest speaker on media polarization Trump discussing resumption of MAGA rallies: report Biden's unavoidable foreign policy crisis MORE , with an ambitious agenda of domestic initiatives, will be sidetracked at some stage this year by a foreign policy crisis. Although not my expertise, I write this with confidence: There almost always is. It might be North Korea, China, Iran, Russia or someplace most have never heard of. It may be a provocation to test a new president, or it may be an unforeseeable incident or action unrelated to diplomatic politics. It could be ephemeral or enduring. ADVERTISEMENT The most striking example is the terrorist attacks on 9/11 which transformed the George W. Bush presidency. So did the ill-fated Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba affect the Kennedy administration. The last two Democratic presidents, Bill Clinton William (Bill) Jefferson Clinton Biden's 'trickle-up' … [Read more...] about Biden’s unavoidable foreign policy crisis
The Lancet COVID-19 Commission, which is working with the United Nations and the World Health Organization to investigate the coronavirus outbreak, is chaired by a Columbia professor who has called the U.S. a “threat” to global peace, while praising China. Jeffrey Sachs, a former UN adviser, has met with WHO and UN officials as part of his work with the Lancet Commission. One Lancet commissioner is Peter Daszak, a zoologist who served on the WHO team that investigated the origins of coronavirus in Wuhan. Like the Chinese government, both Sachs and Daszak have long dismissed the theory that the virus started from a lab leak in Wuhan. The chairman of a blue-ribbon commission working with the United Nations and the World Health Organization to investigate the origins of the coronavirus pandemic has a history of praising and working with China while criticizing the U.S. government. Jeffrey Sachs, a Columbia economist, formed the Lancet COVID-19 Commission, affiliated … [Read more...] about Head Of Blue-Ribbon COVID Commission Has History Of Praising China, Criticizing US
WELLINGTON: Chloe Zhao (Zhang Ting in Chinese) has become a huge international movie icon. She is the second woman and first Asian woman to win Best Director, at the 93rd Academy Award Ceremony for her film Nomadland. This should have been a major victory for China when a 39-year-old Chinese woman shatters glass ceilings to win a total trail of 58 awards. She should be the pride and joy of China, as a model of how the country’s top human talent are setting new global standards not only in tech but also in areas like the arts and film, often thought of as the cultural currency of advanced nations that have arrived. However, news of her award has been blocked in China. Her film, initially scheduled for a limited release in China in late April, has also been banned. READ: Commentary: Why is former Chinese premier Wen Jiabao’s eulogy about his mother being censored? CHLOE ZHAO IS NOT PATRIOTIC ENOUGH? What’s going on? Ms Zhao evidently loves her home country. In … [Read more...] about Commentary: Did Chinese censors just cancel Oscar-winner Chloe Zhao’s Nomadland?
Hong Kong (CNN) They've been dubbed China's "Little Blue Men," an allegedly Beijing-controlled maritime militia that analysts say could be hundreds of boats and thousands of crew members strong. China doesn't acknowledge their existence and when questioned, refers to them as a "so-called maritime militia." But Western experts say the alleged militia is an integral part of Beijing's efforts to exert its territorial claims in the South China Sea and beyond. They claim its blue-painted vessels and their crews -- allegedly funded and controlled by the People's Liberation Army -- can quickly bring a Chinese presence so large around disputed reefs and islands they are almost impossible to challenge without triggering a military confrontation. The apparent militia made headlines last month when more than 200 Chinese fishing boats crowded around Whitsun Reef, a Philippine possession in the Spratly Island chain in the South China Sea. Analysts at the … [Read more...] about Beijing has a navy it doesn’t even admit exists, experts say. And it’s swarming parts of the South China Sea
