There is an Indian community in China! Whatever the actual outcomes of Modi’s visit for Sino-Indian business, the event has already made history in bringing together far-flung expats of Indian origin in China on an unprecedented scale. The significance of this might not be easy to grasp for those living amongst numerous people of Indian origin in the US, UK, South Africa, the Middle East and Down Under. In China, however, the sight of Indian restaurants and other signs of a thriving Indian community is not commonplace outside of the large metropolises (or Yiwu, an outlier and the city with the largest contingent from outside Shanghai at the event). So to have nearly 5000 people of Indian origin under one roof was truly remarkable. A colleague of mine who attended the event commented to me: “I have always wondered where all those Indians travelling with me on Air India flights to China went, because I’ve never seen them afterwards. The coronavirus pandemic was a huge wake-up call for India Inc to reduce the dependency of supplies and imports from China when the supply chain got severely impacted. Covid-19: the current count in IndiaAs per the Health Ministry, the total number of novel coronavirus (Covid-19) cases in India have reached a tally of 508,953 and the death toll is at 15,685. Almost three lakh people have already recovered from Covid-19 in India. Globally, the virus has infected 9,773,855 and killed 493,477 people.Covid report card The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) on Saturday announced that eight states including; Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Telangana, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal have contributed 85.5% of the active Covid-19 caseload and 87% of the total deaths due to the virus in India. The development came during the 17th Group of Ministers (GOM) meeting amid the pandemic. In a release, the ministry informed that it briefed the GOM on the Covid-19 situation in the country, recovery, mortality rates and doubling rates and also asked the states to ramp up their Covid-19 testing.
