SCREENSHOT: Part of the post from the Kata Beach Shore Diving The 2019 King’s Cup Regatta in Phuket has been run and won, packed up and gone home. The annual event, run for the 33rd time this year, is one Thailand’s most prestigious yachting regattas and traditionally allows its vessels to anchor in the natural Kata harbour, using the Beyond Resort in Kata, and other local hotels as their base. But one local group are not only glad to see the fleet gone but want to point out that, despite the grand occasion and all the visiting yachts, there was also an environmental price to pay. Australian tourist drowns off Kata Noi
KATA: A 57-year-old Australian tourist named by police as Ian Branwell drowned in heavy waves off Kata Noi beach on Friday morning. Mr Branwell was staying with his wife at the Kata Thani Hotel. The couple went swimming mid-morning. Mrs Branwell, who last saw her husband floating on his back, noticed that he had disappeared and summoned help. A beach guard on a jet-ski pulled Mr Branwell from the water, but he was declared dead on arrival at Phuket International Hospital. Mr Branwell is the tenth tourist to die in Phuket waters this year. Maldivian wins Kata surfing contest
KATA: Hussain Areef of the Maldives won the shortboard division of the third annual Quiksilver Phuket Surfing Contest, held at Kata Yai Beach at the weekend. Areef outscored 47 other competitors from all over the world. Briton Lee Dowse came second while another Maldivian, Mohamed Fayaz, came third. Local surfing prodigy, 12-year-old Simon de Maria, who has competed in the event since he was eight, made the most of the small waves to claim fourth, beating this year’s highest-ranking Thai, Chalong Tongsook into fifth place. Last year’s winner, Yutaka Arai of Japan, came ninth. In the longboard division, Australian Bill Scholer successfully defended his title against 23 other competitors, keeping American Bob Selznik at bay in second place, while Mick Robinson from Australia came third. “It wasn’t easy to win again,” said Scholer. “There were lots of good surfers from all over the place.” Perry Gilbert from Australia beat 23 others to win the paddleboard contest. Delos Santos adds another e-kata victory
James delos Santos, the top-ranked e-karateka in the world, keeps count of his online gold medals: 36 last year and 11 so far this year. The last of those was more special than the others because his proteges, Fatima A-Isha Lim Hamsain and Christina Karen Colonia, also secured honors along with him. “I’m very proud of Fatima and Karen for bringing home medals as well,” said Delos Santos of his Maharlika Karatedo Kai of the Philippines International students. Together they competed in the recent second leg of the Budva Winner Adria-Cup. There, he defeated World No. 2 Matias Moreno-Domont of Switzerland, 25.8-24.4, for the men’s seniors title. “Last year, I brought home 36 golds. So to add with the 11, that’s 47 gold medals in total,” said Delos Santos. “This tournament will add even more points to the virtual kata world rankings.
