Regrets—I've had a few. I wish I could say they're too few to mention, but that wouldn't be true. If you have ambition, you have regrets. It comes with the territory. I recently made the mistake of writing a memoir recounting adventures from my life and career as a physician and scientist. Naturally, the writing process led me to also meditate on my many regrets, which unfortunately I didn't get a chance to detail in the book because my publisher wanted to "keep things positive." One of my biggest regrets is that I never mastered a musical instrument. I played percussion as a student and also took piano lessons, but didn't stick with it. I was in such a hurry as a young man to achieve my dream of becoming a doctor that other ambitions, such as my musical aspirations, fell by the wayside. I constantly have Walter Mitty-esque fantasies of being an elite musician. Sometimes I even act these fantasies out. A few years ago, I took a visiting professor to an upscale restaurant on the … [Read more...] about ‘I’m A Nobel Laureate, But I Still Have Regrets’

PARIS • The failure to halt climate change, the destruction of nature and other intertwined global crises pose an existential risk to humanity, 10 Nobel laureates said on Thursday following the first-ever Nobel Prize Summit. Only profound changes in the way society produces, distributes and consumes almost everything - starting with energy - can forestall potentially catastrophic changes, they said in a joint statement, also signed by 20 other top thinkers. "We need to reinvent our relationship with planet Earth," the statement said. "Without transformational action this decade, humanity is taking colossal risks with our common future." The risks of pandemics, they noted, are now greater due to destruction of natural habitats, highly networked societies and the spread of fake news on social networks. The Nobel winners said societies must repair and restore the "global commons" that have allowed our species to flourish - the climate, ice, land, ocean, freshwater, forests, soils, … [Read more...] about Humanity taking ‘colossal risks’, warn Nobel laureates

Source: geralt/pixabay American physicist Jeffrey M. Shainline, Ph.D., at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) explores the application of an optoelectronic architecture, inspired by neuroscience and the human brain, as a potential enabling pathway towards artificial general intelligence (AGI) in a new paper published in Applied Physics Letters . Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly accelerating globally from its period of dormancy mainly due to deep learning inspired by the human brain, increased computational power, availability of big data training sets, the parallel processing power of GPUs, and cloud-based computing, among other factors. AI machine learning technology is being incorporated across industry sectors and purposes such as brain-computer interfaces, mental health , astrophysics, movie ratings, extreme weather forecasting, synthetic biology, genomics, drug discovery, antimicrobials, life sciences, neuroscience , … [Read more...] about Can Photonics Enable Artificial General Intelligence?
