Narrow escape for critically endangered Canterbury moth

A happy ending to the tale of the moth and the flame. Department of Conservation (DOC) and Manaaki Whenua/Landcare Research staff have rediscovered the critically endangered Izatha psychra moth, thought to have been wiped out after a bush fire tore through their home. The moths are only found in the 32-hectare Pukaki Scientific Reserve, in Canterbury’s Mackenzie District, which had most of its shrubland destroyed in the devastating 3000-hectare Lake Pukaki fire last August. Researchers were thrilled to catch two males in a half-hectare pocket of undamaged shrubland during a recent survey, with several others thought to have been flying in the area. Suncor refinery north of Denver faces state review of outdated permits, plans $300 million push to be “better not bigger”

Colorado officials committed to cleaner air and reducing reliance on fossil fuels have reached a turning point on whether to tolerate the hulking oil refinery north of Denver that ranks among the state’s major polluters and regularly malfunctions . They must approve or deny Suncor Energy’s applications to renew its operating permits, which serve as contracts governing the emission levels of toxic pollutants that can cause cancer and serious heart, lung and other health problems. This is oversight power Colorado air pollution regulators have declined to use over nearly a decade of letting Suncor run the refinery under the equivalent of an expired driver’s license — a perk granted to companies if they submit timely renewal applications. Suncor’s outdated permits, which records show were issued in 2006 and 2012, allow emissions of 866,100 tons a year of heat-trapping gases and toxics including sulfur dioxide, benzene and hydrogen cyanide . During malfunctions, pollution … [Read more...] about Suncor refinery north of Denver faces state review of outdated permits, plans $300 million push to be “better not bigger”

Will Toronto still need those transit megaprojects after COVID-19?

A little over a year from now, the TTC hopes to start work on a massive transit project beneath the heart of downtown Toronto. The expansion of Bloor-Yonge station will cost an estimated $1.5 billion, take seven years to complete and require building a new subway platform, elevators, and escalators at an underground transit hub surrounded by dense commercial real estate, all while regular train service continues to operate. Before the pandemic, the urgent need to expand Bloor-Yonge was evident to anyone who stood on its Line 1 subway platform on a weekday morning, when crowds of downtown commuters could grow dangerously large. But during the pandemic, those crowds have thinned dramatically. With downtown office towers largely vacant and employers contemplating a shift to work-from-home, when commuters will return to the transit network and in what volume is anyone’s guess. With so much uncertainty, is it time to rethink expensive transit projects that were planned based on … [Read more...] about Will Toronto still need those transit megaprojects after COVID-19?
