Golden Shears ‘gutwrenching’ call to break 60-year run on showcase event
Shearers and organisers of the “Wimbledon of Shearing” say it was “gutwrenching” to have to pull the pin heading into the Wairarapa showcase this week. Invercargill shearer Leon Samuels was in smoking hot form leading into the competition and had a real chance of becoming the first South Islander in three decades to take out the coveted Golden Shears open title. “It was gutwrenching to hear they had made the call, but there was not much they could do about it,” he said. “I didn’t believe it really. I thought they might be able to find some way around it, being the Golden Shears. But obviously, they couldn’t ... so they had to make the hardest choice of cancelling it.” READ MORE: Gavin Mutch claims top spot as shearers face off at Taihape Spritely 86-year-old Invercargill pensioner returns to Golden Shears, 59 years after first competing at event Southland shearer Leon Samuels wins Otago shears title Golden Shears president Sam Saunders said the committee had … [Read more...] about Golden Shears ‘gutwrenching’ call to break 60-year run on showcase event
Too old for the job? 5 employers penalised by MOM for age-related discriminatory hiring
SINGAPORE: Five employers have been barred from hiring foreign employees and renewing the work passes of existing foreign employees for 12 months after they were found to have practised “age-related discriminatory hiring”. These penalties for Wisdomtree Learning Centre, Outshinerz Events, Security & Risk Solutions, Incredible Service Doc and IDOC Pte Ltd kick in “with immediate effect”, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) said in a news release on Friday (Mar 20). The five companies had “placed discriminatory job advertisements, or had indicated preferences for candidates of a certain age group during the hiring process”, MOM said. This was in breach of the Tripartite Guidelines on Fair Employment Practices. The ministry highlighted a job advertisement put out by Wisdomtree Learning Centre on MyCareersFuture.sg on Sep 26 last year. The centre said in its advertisement it preferred “candidates younger than 30 years old” to fill the role of a senior Chinese teacher. US weekly jobless claims hit two-and-a-half-year high; mid-Atlantic factory activity plunges
WASHINGTON: The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits surged by the most since 2012 to a 2-1/2-year high last week, as companies in the services sectors laid off workers because of the coronavirus pandemic. The darkening economic outlook was underscored by other data on Thursday (Mar 19) that showed factory activity in the mid-Atlantic region plunged to its lowest level since 2012 in March, as the highly contagious virus disrupted the supply chain. The coronavirus has crippled the transportation, leisure and hospitality industries, as well as the manufacturing sector. Economists are predicting a surge in job cuts and a recession by the second quarter. Some believe a downturn is already underway. "This shouldn't come as any surprise as the government has sent people home from work to stop the virus spread," said Chris Rupkey, chief economist at MUFG in New York. "Spending and jobs in the economy won't come back until the virus counts of positive cases level out." … [Read more...] about US weekly jobless claims hit two-and-a-half-year high; mid-Atlantic factory activity plunges
