Normal people spent the COVID-19 lockdown watching new shows like Indian Matchmaking or the latest season of The Umbrella Academy . But I'm not normal. After countless conversations with people that've ended in "How the hell have you never seen that?" I've discovered I have a tendency to overlook film and television masterpieces, or simply watch them many, many years after their release. That was the case for the Harry Potter franchise , which I didn't start reading and watching until 2009. CNET Culture Entertain your brain with the coolest news from streaming to superheroes, memes to video games. It happened last spring, when, after having seen only three Marvel movies , I decided it would be fun to watch them all, back-to-back, over an insane two-and-a-half-day period . Now that I have ample time to sit at home and stare at a screen instead of socialize with humans, I decided it was time to consume another series I'd heard people rave about: … [Read more...] about I watched Lost for the first time. Apple has been served with a court order at the FBI's request, demanding that it assist the government agency with unlocking an iPhone 5C that was used by Syed Rizwan Farook. Farook and his wife, Tashfeen Malik, killed 14 and injured 24 in an attack in San Bernardino, California on December 2, 2015. In response, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that the FBI was demanding the equivalent of a backdoor and that complying with the FBI's demand would undermine the security of all iPhones. Whether you call it a "backdoor" or not, it's important to recognize that the ordered changes to the iPhone operating system would not circumvent the core of the iPhone's encryption. The court isn't asking Apple to defeat the encryption in any way. Nor does the court require Apple to create a vulnerability that would jeopardize the security of any other phone. Rather, it's asking Apple to do the one thing that Apple alone can do: use the iPhone's built-in method of installing firmware written by Apple. … [Read more...] about Encryption isn’t at stake, the FBI
Back in 1986 I made a film for the BBC science series Tomorrow’s World about a remarkable new class of drugs called statins. Studies had shown that statins could cut people’s risk of heart disease by lowering their cholesterol levels. It was all very exciting. Thirty-five years on and statins are now one of the most commonly prescribed drugs in the UK, with around eight million people, including me, taking them daily. Yet they continue to be dogged by controversy and fear of side-effects. Studies had shown that statins could cut people’s risk of heart disease by lowering their cholesterol levels. It was all very exciting Last year, for example, there were claims that statins might increase your risk of dying from Covid-19. Studies had shown that people admitted to intensive care tended to have lower levels of cholesterol, so there was a fear that taking cholesterol-lowering drugs might make you more vulnerable. Well, like so many health scares, this one turned … [Read more...] about DR MICHAEL MOSLEY: Can statins save you from Covid as well as heart disease?
WandaVision arrived at its reality-warping end Friday with episode 9 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe show hitting Disney Plus . We've come to the season finale, in the wake of Agatha Harkness ( Kathryn Hahn ) realizing Wanda Maximoff ( Elizabeth Olsen ) is the Chaos magic-wielding Scarlet Witch , and it sure looks like they're gonna fight on the streets of Westview. Sign up for Disney Plus Wanda's husband, Vision ( Paul Bettany ), is also on his way home, having been filled in on his past by astrophysicist Darcy Lewis ( Kat Dennings ). However, we've learned this Vision is a magical construct created by Wanda -- shifty SWORD director Tyler Hayward ( Josh Stamberg ) brought his original synthezoid body back online outside the town, but it appears to be a soulless husk. CNET Culture Entertain your brain with the coolest news from streaming to superheroes, memes to video games. Also in play is the newly superpowered SWORD agent … [Read more...] about WandaVision season finale recap: The ending and post-credits scenes explained
CALGARY, Alberta — The fossilized remains of two pterosaurs — winged reptiles that flew sky high during the dinosaur age — suggest that the soaring truck- and plane-size beasts were closely related to the gigantic Quetzalcoatlus northropi , the largest pterosaur on record, new research finds. Both pterosaurs date back to the Maastrichtian, a period that occurred between 72 million and 66 million years ago. It ended when a 6-mile-wide (10 kilometers) asteroid slammed into Earth, ending the reign of the nonavian dinosaurs and countless reptiles, including the pterosaurs. The newly unearthed pterosaurs were found in Jordan in 2005 and 2008, and both belong to a family of pterosaurs called Azhdarchids, which includes the famous Q. northropi — a pterosaur the size of an airplane, with an almost-40-foot (12 meters) wingspan. [ Photos of Pterosaurs: Flight in the Age of Dinosaurs ] In general, pterosaurs had long wings supported by an elongated fourth digit (the ring finger on … [Read more...] about Truck- and Plane-Size Pterosaurs Once Flew Over Dinosaurs
