There’s no question that our culture is—ahem—still evolving when it comes to sexuality . Male heterosexual desire is still highlighted more than feminine desire, queer desire or other forms of longing and arousal. Yet there is an apparent paradox. The caricatured version of male sexual desire dominates media and culture while nuanced views remain under-represented, teaching the wrong lesson about what male sexuality is and can be. Undetected, this becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Does male desire tend to be two-dimensional, exactly because it is so dominant as to assume the guise of truth? Men may feel pressure to be one way, being another way a source of stigma and shame . This state of affairs perpetuates unconscious bias which shapes development by presenting a restricted and constraining set of paths to follow and models to emulate. After claiming his second stage victory of the 2020 Tour de France, praise continues to greet every effort from 21-year-old Tadej Pogacar from Slovenia. Despite competing at the event for the first time in his career, excellent performances have ensured that not only does he look certain to claim the youth title, he remains within touching distance of his compatriot Primoz Roglic, who maintains overall leadership of the General Classification after Stage 15. During what looks set to become a golden era for Slovenian professional cycling, both riders have excelled throughout the Tour this year. It’s easy to judge Michael’s reaction as ungracious, emblematic of the polarized times we live in. What kind of person takes pleasure from another’s pain? But then I remember: didn’t I delight in how devastated Donald Trump must have felt with his electoral defeat, and before that with the karma that came from his getting Covid after minimizing the coronavirus ’s importance? All of a sudden I feel a little dizzy on my high horse. Between partisan politics , social media and an environment in which more people are coming forward with accusations against public figures, the times are ripe for schadenfreude – the experience of taking pleasure … [Read more...] about What Do Cuomo and Trump Have in Common?
