HONG KONG: The Excelsior, an iconic hotel overlooking the Victoria Harbour, will be shut down at the end of March next year, in a move some analysts said could reduce room supply in the Causeway Bay area by up to 8 per cent and drive prices up at competing hotels. Mandarin Oriental International, the Singapore-listed owner of the Excelsior, said in a stock exchange statement on Tuesday (Oct 9) that it would close the hotel on Mar 31 next year and redevelop the site into a mixed-use commercial building. The redevelopment is expected to take six years and cost US$650 million, the company said. Hong Kong singer-actress Sammi Cheng will be arriving in town this December to attend the 29 th Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF). Cheng will be gracing the Southeast Asian premiere of First Night Nerves – her highly anticipated film alongside fellow star Gigi Leung – which will start at 9.30pm, Dec 7 at the National Museum Of Singapore. SINGAPORE: Renowned Chinese martial arts novelist Louis Cha, better known by his pen name Jin Yong, died on Tuesday (Oct 30) after battling illness, Hong Kong media reported. He was 94. The prolific writer has sold more than 100 million of his wuxia or martial arts novels which include Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre, The Legend of the Condor Heroes and The Deer and the Cauldron. Hailed as a literary giant, his fictional works have been translated into multiple languages and adapted into television dramas, movies, comic books and video games. Born in Hangzhou in 1924, Jin Yong had intended to become a diplomat, Hong Kong reports said. He started working for a newspaper in Shanghai to pay for his school fees and later went to Hong Kong to work as a journalist. He began writing his first novel, The Book and The Sword, in 1955 and it was serialised in the New Evening Post under his pen name Jin Yong. At least two dead in Guangdong after Typhoon Mangkhut hits China
SHANGHAI: At least two people were reportedly killed in Guangdong province after a devastating typhoon hit mainland China, suspending key transport services and forcing millions of residents to evacuate. Typhoon Mangkhut made landfall in Haiyan town at 5pm on Sunday (Sep 16). China's southern regions faced more heavy rainfall on Monday as the storm swept west, the country's weather bureau said.
