Johor celebrates king of fruits with durian eating competition, thorny race

SEGAMAT, Johor: Johoreans celebrated their love affair with the king of fruits on Saturday (Jun 29) by participating in durian-themed activities at Kampung Abdullah in Segamat. The activities, which included an eating competition for families and a team race for school children, were held in conjunction with the state's Agriculture Expo and Fruit Fair 2019. The theme of the event: Everything Durian. For the durian eating competition, each family, represented by one parent and two children, were asked to eat as much durian as they could within seven minutes. A dozen families competed, with the adults tasked to cut open the fruits using a parang, while all three in the team would eat as much durian as they could. The teams competed enthusiastically, with children as young as two years old devouring the creamy fruit one after another. They guzzled down mineral water provided before stuffing their mouths with more fruit. Judges weighed the durians before and after … [Read more...] about Johor celebrates king of fruits with durian eating competition, thorny race

What Kuala Lumpur’s Zoo Negara is doing to attract more visitors

KUALA LUMPUR: The giant panda enclosure at Kuala Lumpur’s Zoo Negara provided visitors a cooling respite from the hot and humid weather. On Tuesday morning (Jun 11), the zoo’s biggest attraction, a one-year-old giant panda cub, was enjoying the air-conditioned comfort as it lay sprawled on a wooden platform. The fluffy female cub, the second offspring of a pair of giant pandas Liang Liang and Xing Xing on loan from China, seemed oblivious that a tourist on the visitor platform, Mr Khaled Jafar from the United Arab Emirates, was trying to snap a close-up picture on his camera phone. “It’s so adorable and well worth the zoo entrance fee to be so close to a baby panda,” Mr Khaled told CNA. “I also appreciate that I don’t have to jostle with crowds and can take my own time to appreciate them.” The panda family outnumbered the total number of visitors at the enclosure, a reflection of the declining visitor problem at Zoo Negara. To address the issue, the zoo's management … [Read more...] about What Kuala Lumpur’s Zoo Negara is doing to attract more visitors

From lawyer to insect farmer: Malaysian entrepreneur touts roasted crickets as healthy, sustainable snack

KUALA LUMPUR: Large blue containers containing around a million crickets filled a shophouse in Kuala Lumpur. The entire unit is fully sealed like a prison, with all windows closed. There is no air-conditioning or electric fan so that the environment is warm, humid and dark all day. When Mr Kevin Wu opened the door of his farm in Petaling Jaya, a chorus of chirping crickets was immediately heard. The critters scurried around in the containers, housed in separate areas depending on the different stages of their life cycles. While crickets may be pests for some, Mr Wu is turning them into a niche business – food for human consumption. “They’re crispy and fill you up quickly. They (consumers) would never know until they have tried,” said Mr Wu, founder and CEO of his company Ento. “We have a lot of return customers who are conscious about their health and fitness. Our snacks keep them full for longer, because crickets are really high in fibre - four times the fibre … [Read more...] about From lawyer to insect farmer: Malaysian entrepreneur touts roasted crickets as healthy, sustainable snack

Commentary: Love of food, lack of activity leave Singaporeans vulnerable to diabetes

SINGAPORE: Last week, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong highlighted that Singapore must “go all out” to fight diabetes in his National Day message. He said a big reason for ill health in old age is diabetes, with almost a third of those over 60 having this disease. “At first diabetes is an invisible disease, but over time its consequences are severe – blindness, heart disease, kidney failure (and) amputated limbs.” Each one of us must take responsibility for our own health, and this must start from young, he said. While there are good doctors and hospitals, it is better for people to stay healthy and not go to one, he added. Mr Lee’s remarks have gotten Singaporeans wondering, what is it about diabetes that makes it so serious it winds up in the Prime Minister’s National Day message? And if Singapore’s diabetes problem is serious, does that mean that the personal precautions we each take are not enough? SINGAPOREANS PARTICULARLY VULNERABLE For many, diabetes used to be … [Read more...] about Commentary: Love of food, lack of activity leave Singaporeans vulnerable to diabetes
