Massive jungle areas in Sumatra and Borneo island are ablaze as thousands of personnel battle to quell the fires, frequently started to clear land for crop plantations. In Indonesia the number of hotspots – areas at risk of fires – has soared in parts, including on Borneo which the country shares with Malaysia and Brunei. Air quality has dropped to “unhealthy” levels in and around KL, according to the government’s air pollutant index, and the skyline has been shrouded in thick smog, while haze also hung over Singapore. In southern Thailand there has also been alarm as the smoke haze has started to build this week. Residents are being advised to stay indoors ar wear face-masks outside as a precaution. Crocodile attacks and kills 55 year old fisherman in Indonesia
A crocodile was hunted and killed after it attacked and ate a 55 year old fisherman. Reports reveal that villagers at Riau province Indonesia, on the central eastern coast of Sumatra facing the Strait of Malacca, got together to help to catch the crocodile. When the crocodile was eventually captured and killed, the villagers then cut open the crocodile’s belly to confirmed if it had eaten the victim. According to the fisherman’s friend ‘Toha’, on Sunday night a 4 metre crocodile pulled the 55 year old man ‘Syafri’ straight into the Lakar River. Toha managed to scramble up the muddy banks to safety after witnessing the reptile attack his friend at close quarters. He says he tried his hardest to attract the crocodile’s attention before deciding to call for help. While searching for the crocodile on the morning after the incident rescue teams made a gruesome discovery of the victim’s leg washed up on the river bank. Not long after discovering the body part they managed to track … [Read more...] about Crocodile attacks and kills 55 year old fisherman in Indonesia

The tsunami reached Phuket and provinces nearby around 10am on Boxing Day, December 26, 2004, and caused uncountable losses. Official Thai government statistics estimate 4,812 souls were lost to the waves on December 26, 2004, with another 8,457 injured and 4,499missing, presumed dead, all lost to the 3 large waves that swept inland along parts of the Andaman Coast. While confirmed deaths in Phuket officially numbered only 259, another 700 remained listed as missing. Up to 270,000 souls from 45 countries around the world were lost with millions affected. The coastal Thai community of Khao Lak, north of Phuket, was particularly badly affected by the waves. Poom Jensen, the grandson of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, and a nephew of the current Thai King, was killed whilst his family was holidaying … [Read more...] about Thailand remembers the 16th anniversary of the Indian Ocean Tsunami
