Vietnam recruits volunteers for human trials of second Covid-19 vaccine

The Institute of Vaccines and Medical Biologicals (IVAC) on Friday started recruiting volunteers for the initial phase of clinical trials for the second Made-in-Vietnam Covid-19 vaccine known as Covivac. Illustrative photo by VNA According to IVAC, they will select 150 volunteers aged between 18 and 59 for the first phase of human trials, in which they will be injected with two 0.5 ml doses of the vaccine 28 days apart. Volunteers will remain at the clinical trial area for a period of 24 hours after receiving their shots in order to allow them to be under strict health observations by the research team. The aim of the first phase is to evaluate the safety of the doses, along with the patient’s immune response to the vaccine, thereby identifying the optimal level of the doses so trials can move on to the second phase. Through pre-clinical assessments carried out in India, the United States, and Vietnam, the locally-produced Covivac vaccine has … [Read more...] about Vietnam recruits volunteers for human trials of second Covid-19 vaccine

9 Great Apes At San Diego Zoo Become First Non-Humans To Receive A COVID Vaccine

SAN DIEGO (CBSLA) – Nine great apes at the San Diego Zoo have received a COVID-19 vaccine, it was reported Thursday. The four orangutans and five bonobos received an experimental vaccine developed by drug maker Zoetis, per CBS News. The zoo chose to give the great apes the vaccine after several gorillas at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park contracted COVID-19 in early January. “That made us realize that our other apes were at risk,” Nadine Lamberski, chief conservation and wildlife health officer for the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, told the San Diego Union-Tribune newspaper Thursday. “We wanted to do our best to protect them from this virus because we don’t really know how it’s going to impact them.” They mark the first known non-human primates to get the shot, according to CBS News . Zoetis announced in late January that it had received a request from the zoo to provide them with the experimental vaccine for emergency use. Zoetis said it has tested the vaccine on dogs, … [Read more...] about 9 Great Apes At San Diego Zoo Become First Non-Humans To Receive A COVID Vaccine

Microsoft Mesh is humanity’s jaw-dropping hologram future

At the Microsoft Ignite conference, the company's Alex Kipman unveiled a new hologram-based mixed-reality communication platform called Microsoft Mesh. This thing is jaw-dropping. Its most basic purpose is allowing people in different physical locations to join a shared environment, with 3D capture technology creating a hologram of each person therein (a process Microsoft insists on calling 'holoportation'), all running atop the company's cloud platform Azure. There's some forgiveable exagerration at points in the above precis of the Ignite presentation (no, this is not 'teleporting' people), but it showcases the potential for this technology far beyond mere business meetings. A family watching huge shoals of fish on the ocean floor, the software highlighting certain species with information as the father points (yes the world is becoming a video game). Engineers and mechanics messing around with hologrammatic equipment, finger-controlled UI overlays altering the working … [Read more...] about Microsoft Mesh is humanity’s jaw-dropping hologram future

Stettler County will lobby about human fecal matter in Buffalo Lake

The County of Stettler will lobby the Alberta Safety Codes Authority (ASCA) to closely monitor private wastewater systems surrounding Buffalo Lake after councillors were required to alter a bylaw that had already passed first reading. The decisions were made at the Feb. 10 regular meeting of council streamed via the county’s YouTube channel. Councillors read a report from Director of Municipal Services Andrew Brysiuk, who noted a water and wastewater bylaw, if it was to receive second and third reading, had to be changed. “Bylaw 1652-21, Water and Wastewater was presented for first reading at the January 2021 regular council meeting,” stated Brysiuk’s memo. “At that time, it was advised that administration was seeking direction from council prior to referring the bylaw to legal counsel. Upon review, our lawyers advised that the provisions of the bylaw that sought to give the county the ability to require compliance with the Safety Codes Act was inconsistent with the Safety … [Read more...] about Stettler County will lobby about human fecal matter in Buffalo Lake

Joe Biden Promises ‘Humane and Effective’ Migration Plan in Call with Guatemala President

President Joe Biden spoke with President Alejandro Giammattei Falla of Guatemala promising to develop a “humane and effective” plan for migrants traveling from his country to the United States. “Both Presidents agreed for their respective teams to meet in the coming weeks to develop an effective and humane plan of action to manage migration,” a readout of the call sent to reporters read. Biden also expressed condolences for the 13 Guatemalan migrants who were shot and killed in Northern Mexico in January and had their bodies badly burned. A dozen state police officers in Mexico have been charged in the killings. President Biden also promised to help Guatemala by “combating corruption, promoting economic opportunity, and enhancing civilian security” which the White House described as the “root causes” of migration from Guatemala to the United States. Biden’s call with the Guatemala president proves he is willing to return migration back to normal, after canceling … [Read more...] about Joe Biden Promises ‘Humane and Effective’ Migration Plan in Call with Guatemala President
