Malaysia’s badminton fraternity braces for life without Lee Chong Wei

KUALA LUMPUR: Dogged by illness and advanced age, the career of Malaysian badminton superstar Lee Chong Wei appears to be nearing the end. The richest sportsman in Malaysia – his total prize money collected so far stands at US$1.85 million - had identified the Olympic Games 2020 as his last hurrah. However, Lee’s time on the court might be cut short even before the games, if he fails to meet the qualification mark. Malaysian badminton is now into its 10th month without Lee, who has yet to make a comeback after battling early-stage nose cancer and will miss the World Championships in August. He is still working on his fitness and his current world ranking has slipped to 113th. Lee, 36, was the only Malaysian shuttler to have ever held the world No 1 ranking for more than a year. One of his regrets will be not winning any major tournament. However, he has won 69 titles and is still seen as Malaysia’s best hope for glory. With Lee’s retirement just around the corner, the … [Read more...] about Malaysia’s badminton fraternity braces for life without Lee Chong Wei

What Kuala Lumpur’s Zoo Negara is doing to attract more visitors

KUALA LUMPUR: The giant panda enclosure at Kuala Lumpur’s Zoo Negara provided visitors a cooling respite from the hot and humid weather. On Tuesday morning (Jun 11), the zoo’s biggest attraction, a one-year-old giant panda cub, was enjoying the air-conditioned comfort as it lay sprawled on a wooden platform. The fluffy female cub, the second offspring of a pair of giant pandas Liang Liang and Xing Xing on loan from China, seemed oblivious that a tourist on the visitor platform, Mr Khaled Jafar from the United Arab Emirates, was trying to snap a close-up picture on his camera phone. “It’s so adorable and well worth the zoo entrance fee to be so close to a baby panda,” Mr Khaled told CNA. “I also appreciate that I don’t have to jostle with crowds and can take my own time to appreciate them.” The panda family outnumbered the total number of visitors at the enclosure, a reflection of the declining visitor problem at Zoo Negara. To address the issue, the zoo's management … [Read more...] about What Kuala Lumpur’s Zoo Negara is doing to attract more visitors

VIETNAM BUSINESS NEWS MARCH 3

Foreign ship arrivals down 6 percent in first two months Vietnam’s sea ports have berthed some 4,900 foreign vessels over the last two months, a decline of 6 percent year-on-year, according to the Vietnam Marine Administration. The fall was due largely to the impact of COVID-19, which is resulting in major fluctuations in the transport sector, a representative of the administration said. Despite the lower number of foreign ships, the volume of import and export goods through ports grew. In January and February, 35.3 million tonnes of imports and 26 million tonnes of exports were handled at ports nationwide. The former represented an annual increase of 14 percent while the latter was as same as that last year. In particular, nearly 1.3 million TEUs for exports and 1.2 million for imports were handled during the period, up 32 and 16 percent, respectively, year-on-year; the highest growth since the pandemic began. Meanwhile, the arrival of domestic vessels totalled … [Read more...] about VIETNAM BUSINESS NEWS MARCH 3

Commentary: COVID-19 has shown Singapore digital arts and humanities are quite the essential service

SINGAPORE: I will be taking my students next week on a tour of the Borobudur heritage site in Central Java, Indonesia. We will climb the vast hilltop monastery and admire the many Buddha statues and bas-reliefs depicting ancient tales of sacred lives. We won’t wear face masks or worry about social distancing since we will travel together virtually using a combination of Zoom and the recently digitised heritage site on Google Maps. While COVID-19 represents an unprecedented challenge for the arts, culture and heritage sectors in Singapore, it has been striking that in defiance of the pandemic, we have still found new technological ways to turn to the arts and humanities for inspiration, solace, and fellow feeling. Cinematic performances, shows and podcasts have filled the spaces of our coronavirus circuit breaker period.
