House buyer whose brand new £500K dream home had ‘150 faults faces £35,000 bill for repairs’

A HOMEOWNER is faced with a £35,000 repair bill just months after moving into his new build house and discovering it had 110 problems. John Gaskell bought the property in Whittlesford, Cambridge, less than two years ago and had planned on retiring in the £500,000 home. But just 18 months after moving in he has been battling with his developer over building faults with the insulation and drainage issues. John has been told that the repairs will leave him £35,000 out of pocket, and is furious that Cambridge & County Developments (C&CD) sold him the property in September 2019 with so many problems. He has now launched a campaign calling for tougher rights for new build buyers against developers, after paying for an independent snagging and defects inspector to check the property. Around 110 problems were identified by the company, and the developer initially agreed that they had not been up to standard and that they would fix it. Speaking to The Mirror John … [Read more...] about House buyer whose brand new £500K dream home had ‘150 faults faces £35,000 bill for repairs’

Coronavirus: Dorm operators say steps to prevent mixing among foreign workers not foolproof

Foreign worker dormitories have taken steps to limit residents from mixing with one another , but these are not foolproof, say dorm operators who point out that no number of rules will work if people do not adhere to them. Since the dorms were declared clear of Covid-19 a month ago, on Aug 11 , an average of 45 workers have tested positive for the disease daily, the Health Ministry disclosed on Wednesday. They were detected primarily through active surveillance testing , such as rostered routine testing (RRT), and aggressive tracing and testing when a new case is detected. The chief executive of dormitory operator Centurion, Mr Kong Chee Min, noted that it was possible now for workers to be infected elsewhere, away from their dorms, because many are spending part of their day outside following the resumption of work and the gradual relaxation of some restrictions. He called for a coordinated effort with employers to enforce precautions at their worksites and urged workers … [Read more...] about Coronavirus: Dorm operators say steps to prevent mixing among foreign workers not foolproof

Covid-19 cases detected in cleared dorms mainly through active testing, aggressive tracing; about 45 cases found daily

SINGAPORE - New Covid-19 cases in dormitories previously cleared of the virus were picked up mainly through active surveillance testing and aggressive contact tracing, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said. Since the dormitories were declared cleared nearly a month ago on Aug 11, there have been an average of 45 workers testing positive for the coronavirus daily, the ministry shared in a press release on Wednesday (Sept 9). Workers who previously tested negative for Covid-19 and are staying in these dormitories are susceptible to catching the virus, it added. New cases may arise among them. The statement comes in the wake of cases of Covid-19 infections surfacing among the cleared dormitories. These were detected primarily through active surveillance testing, such as rostered routine testing (RRT), and through aggressive tracing and testing, whenever a new case is detected. About 2 per cent of these newly detected cases had positive serological tests, which indicate past … [Read more...] about Covid-19 cases detected in cleared dorms mainly through active testing, aggressive tracing; about 45 cases found daily

Long and hard battle to clear worker dorms of Covid-19

Construction worker Ajith Kumar, 24, who resides in Singapore's largest foreign worker dormitory, says conditions have changed in recent months. His 8m by 6m room at Sungei Tengah Lodge (STL), which he shares with 11 others, is cleaner, with cleaning supplies provided. He uses an app on his mobile phone to scan a QR code near the room's entrance, to report his location to the authorities twice daily. He hopes to be back at work soon, after a lapse of four months. These are just a few changes among many made in the battle against Covid-19 in the dorms since early April, when the first dorms were gazetted as isolation areas. FOUR-MONTH BATTLE Yesterday, Singapore finished testing all 323,000 workers in dorms for Covid-19. A "massive undertaking", as Education Minister Lawrence Wong, co-chair of the multi-ministry virus task force, said in a Facebook post. And as of Monday, some nine in 10 of these workers - or 273,000 - have recovered or been tested to be free … [Read more...] about Long and hard battle to clear worker dorms of Covid-19
