Migrant children separated from their parents through the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” policy experienced more severe mental trauma than children who were not separated, according to a government watchdog report. Separated children “exhibited more fear, feelings of abandonment, and post-traumatic stress” than children who were not separated, according to a report released Wednesday by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) inspector general. According to the report, some children did not understand why they were being separated and sometimes thought their parents had abandoned them. Mental health staff said some children expressed so much grief and confusion over the separation that they cried inconsolably. ADVERTISEMENT The report detailed the challenges faced by mental health professionals who were often overwhelmed by the level of trauma faced by children in HHS custody. Time limit on Troubles prosecutions must apply to terrorists as well as soldiers, Northern Ireland veterans’ commissioner says
Northern Ireland's Veterans Commissioner today said a time limit on Troubles prosecutions must apply to terrorists as well as former British Army veterans. However, Ulster Unionist Danny Kinahan denied equating members of the Armed Forces with extremists, adding: 'I never have and I never will.' SINGAPORE - Improving the wages and living conditions of foreign workers in Singapore requires a whole-of-society effort. Not only must the Government take the lead in making structural changes, but Singaporeans, too, must change their us-versus-them mindset, said analysts. Dr Jeremy Lim, co-director of global health at the NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, said on Wednesday (May 6) the Government's framing of Covid-19 as two separate outbreaks - one in foreign worker dormitories and the other in the community - was a "defensible" one from a public health perspective. That is because different strategies were used to tackle each outbreak, he added. Dr Lim was speaking at an online forum organised by the Institute of Policy Studies on the topic of "Migrant workers: Policy responses and lessons from the Covid-19 pandemic". He noted that as infection numbers spiked in the dorms and overwhelmed the ability of their operators as well as employers to contain the disease, … [Read more...] about Structural and mindset changes needed to improve wages and living conditions of foreign workers, say analysts

This weekend’s delayed April Oscars was not producers’ original plan (it probably wasn’t their sixth plan, frankly), and this will hopefully be the last time we stretch any awards season out this long. Now, at the end of the longest Oscars season in history, it’s time to rank every single one of the nominated films, from 56th to first. This year’s crop of Oscar nominees is mostly very good (there’s no shame in being the 42nd-best movie … [Read more...] about Every 2021 Oscar-Nominated Movie, Ranked
