India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi today announced a new app to encourage more Indians to pay online in the aftermath of invalidation of most circulated cash last month . Called Bharat Interface for Money (BHIM), the app works on top of the country's UPI mobile banking platform and uses a mobile number as the payment address. The app, which has the simplest user interface for any UPI-enabled app to date, is positioned as a substitute for plastic cards and point-of-sale terminals. SEE ALSO: Inside India's plan to substitute cash with its citizen's fingerprints To use BHIM app, a user is required to register their bank account with the app, set a UPI PIN for the account, and use their mobile number as payment address. Users also have the option create a custom payment address. The biggest selling point for the app is it works across all banks and users do not need to use separate apps in case they have multiple accounts in different banks. BHIM also supports QR codes to … [Read more...] about BHIM app will replace all cash transactions in India: PM Modi

Dolphins Can Call Each Other, Not by Name, But by Whistle
Every bottlenose dolphin has its own whistle, a high-pitched, warbly "eeee" that tells the other dolphins that a particular individual is present. Dolphins are excellent vocal mimics, too, able to copy even quirky computer-generated sounds. So, scientists have wondered if dolphins can copy each other's signature whistles—which would be very similar to people saying each others' names. Now, an analysis of whistles recorded from hundreds of wild bottlenose dolphins confirms that they can indeed "name" each other, and suggests why they do so—a discovery that may help researchers translate more of what these brainy marine mammals are squeaking, trilling, and clicking about. "It's a wonderful study, really solid," says Peter Tyack, a marine mammal biologist at the University of St. Andrews in the United Kingdom who was not involved in this project. "Having the ability to learn another individual's name is … not what most animals do. Monkeys have food calls and calls … [Read more...] about Dolphins Can Call Each Other, Not by Name, But by Whistle
‘Covid response is highly dependent on leadership’
'If you don't have a strong political leadership, however much expertise a country may have, in pandemic preparedness or infectious disease, will not matter.' That's something we have been wearily, dismayingly wondering about since last March. We have pondered, without end, over when this virus, that has overwhelmingly dominated our lives for 16 months, will finally be neutralised. Infectious disease and public health expert Dr Amesh Adalja believes COVID-19 will be with us, in its present more aggressive avatar, till 2022. Dr Adalja, an infectious disease specialist, practices in the Pittsburgh area of Pennsylvania. He is also a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security and adjunct assistant professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, attached … [Read more...] about ‘Covid response is highly dependent on leadership’
Dolphin Memories Span at Least 20 Years
Ever been at a party where you recognize everyone’s faces but can’t think of their names? That wouldn’t happen if you were a bottlenose dolphin ( Tursiops truncatus ). The marine mammals can remember each other’s signature contact whistles—calls that function as names—for more than 20 years, the longest social memory ever recorded for a nonhuman animal, according to a new study. “The ability to remember individuals is thought to be extremely important to the ‘social brain,’ ” says Janet Mann, a marine mammal biologist at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., who was not involved in the research. Yet, she notes, no one has succeeded in designing a test for this talent in the great apes—our closest kin—let alone in dolphins. Dolphins use their signature whistles to stay in touch. Each has its own unique whistle, and they learn and can repeat the whistles of other dolphins. A dolphin will answer when another dolphin mimics its whistle—just as we reply when someone calls our … [Read more...] about Dolphin Memories Span at Least 20 Years
