Today's vacuum cleaners have moved well beyond the bulky, unwieldy appliances they once were. Modern machines are lightweight, cordless and powered by rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. Many can handle different types of flooring, from hardwood to thick carpets. And they often come with useful attachments to help with more chores around the house. One company in particular saw this trend coming. Dyson was the first to pioneer this field with a series of capable -- and pricey -- Cyclone V series stick vacs. Other companies have since followed suit, and now sell cordless vacuums of their own. Some have even shamelessly cloned Dyson products. STACY SQUIRES The new Christchurch Hospital Hagley is the South Island’s largest hospital building. (First published August 2020) After more than a decade in planning and construction the largest hospital building in New Zealand is finally in the hands of Canterbury’s health authority. The Ministry of Health officially handed over Christchurch Hospital’s Hagley building to the Canterbury District Health Board on Monday, over two years later than expected. Media were given a sneak peek at the $525 million facility on Tuesday. Patients will be treated in the facility from the week of November 16. First there will be extensive preparation including clinical cleaning, testing of equipment, and orientation for about 3000 staff.
