Structural and mindset changes needed to improve wages and living conditions of foreign workers, say analysts

SINGAPORE - Improving the wages and living conditions of foreign workers in Singapore requires a whole-of-society effort. Not only must the Government take the lead in making structural changes, but Singaporeans, too, must change their us-versus-them mindset, said analysts. Dr Jeremy Lim, co-director of global health at the NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, said on Wednesday (May 6) the Government's framing of Covid-19 as two separate outbreaks - one in foreign worker dormitories and the other in the community - was a "defensible" one from a public health perspective. That is because different strategies were used to tackle each outbreak, he added. Dr Lim was speaking at an online forum organised by the Institute of Policy Studies on the topic of "Migrant workers: Policy responses and lessons from the Covid-19 pandemic". He noted that as infection numbers spiked in the dorms and overwhelmed the ability of their operators as well as employers to contain the disease, … [Read more...] about Structural and mindset changes needed to improve wages and living conditions of foreign workers, say analysts

Brothers Osborne Offer a Message of Resilience in ‘Younger Me’

In February of this year, Brothers Osborne singer-guitarist TJ Osborne publicly came out as gay. It’s the kind of thing that might not seem like such a huge deal in a post-Obergefell nation, but the announcement instantly made Osborne the most visible gay man in country music’s often-conservative mainstream wing. Since coming out, Osborne has handled the spotlight and questions with characteristic grace and easygoing Maryland charm. It’s given his duo with sibling John Osborne a jolt of fresh energy and confidence too — on Sunday night’s ACM Awards, the pair got to close the event with a ripping version of “ Dead Man’s Curve ,” ably demonstrating why they’re one of the most vital live groups out there. Lawmakers react to guilty verdict in Chauvin murder trial: ‘Our work is far from done’

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle took to social media to share their thoughts after a verdict was reached in the murder trial of Derek Chauvin. Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer, was found guilty Tuesday of second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in the killing of George Floyd . Many politicos expressed approval over the trial outcome, and noted its influence on helping to hold law enforcement accountable. ADVERTISEMENT The jury's verdict delivers accountability for Derek Chauvin, but not justice for George Floyd. Real justice for him and too many others can only happen when we build a nation that fundamentally respects the human dignity of every person. https://t.co/JyJFztQbDu — Bernie Sanders Bernie Sanders Newsmax host: Jury decided to 'sacrifice' Chauvin to the mob Lawmakers react to guilty verdict in Chauvin murder trial: 'Our work is far from done' Senate confirms SEC chief Gensler to full five-year … [Read more...] about Lawmakers react to guilty verdict in Chauvin murder trial: ‘Our work is far from done’

Every 2021 Oscar-Nominated Movie, Ranked

Photo-Illustration: by Vulture; Photos by A24, Netflix and Fox Searchlight Pictures It has been a very long road to the 93rd Academy Awards, and we probably don’t need to remind you of the reasons why . This weekend’s delayed April Oscars was not producers’ original plan (it probably wasn’t their sixth plan, frankly), and this will hopefully be the last time we stretch any awards season out this long. But at the end of the day, here we are, together at last, ready to see awards handed out in 23 categories, among a total of 56 nominated feature-length and short films. Watching all these nominated films has been an undertaking, though thankfully this year’s nominees were all much more available on streaming and VOD than ever before. Now, at the end of the longest Oscars season in history, it’s time to rank every single one of the nominated films, from 56th to first. This year’s crop of Oscar nominees is mostly very good (there’s no shame in being the 42nd-best movie … [Read more...] about Every 2021 Oscar-Nominated Movie, Ranked

‘Stolen: The Search for Jermain’ Highlights Plight of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women

Connie Walker vividly remembers the day she started to pitch a story about a missing indigenous woman to her boss at a national currents-affair show — a woman whose disappearance was garnering far less attention than that of a white woman in a similar situation. Walker had hardly started speaking when she says her editor held up a hand, cutting her off: “This isn’t another ‘poor Indian story,’ is it?” the editor asked. “I think that that was the attitude for a really long time,” Walker tells Rolling Stone . “The reality was that for a really long time, there wasn’t any interest in our stories.” Walker is now the host of Missing & Murdered , a podcast series previously created by CBC that’s now run by Gimlet. A member of the Cree tribe from Saskatchewan, Canada, Walker grew up on a first nation reserve, like many of her subjects, giving her intimate insight into the women whose stories she tells.
