Paramount Pictures has hired Mika Pryce as SVP Production for its Motion Picture Group. She starts on April 26 and reports to Motion Picture Group co-presidents Daria Cercek and Michael Ireland. “Mika has fantastic talent relationships, excellent taste and knows how to build a movie from the ground up,” Cercek and Ireland said Wednesday. “We’re excited to have her bring her entrepreneurial skill set to the studio to help us tell great stories for global audiences. Roku’s Quibi content has a new, original name

Roku is officially getting into original content. The set-top box maker announced Roku Originals, a new brand, in a press release today. Roku says it will debut over 75 original series and films this year on its free, ad-supported network, The Roku Channel. Quite a few of these original new shows will come from the Quibi library of content Roku got in a fire sale in January 2021 . Earlier this year, Protocol spied a job listing that suggested Roku would be investing in original content beyond the Quibi stuff it now owns. Free, ad-supported content is still a relatively new but growing area in streaming. Peacock, Paramount Plus, and even Plex have all had some success wooing viewers with totally free stuff they can watch on their set-top boxes and smart TVs. It makes sense that Roku, a company that makes the bulk of its money from ads already, would follow suit. There’s no word on which content will be released first or when it will even begin airing, but it's likely you’ll … [Read more...] about Roku’s Quibi content has a new, original name

Pili: The ‘King of Nuts’ reigns in Bicol

AS we earnestly search for and validate indigenous products with potential to help speed up our economic recovery, there is the versatile pili nut waiting to be cracked for domestic and global markets. I am tempted to believe that had there been a pili tree in the Garden of Eden, the wondrous pili nut, not the apple, could have made Adam and Eve man and woman. Perhaps, the nutritious and delicious pili nut and the prolific pili tree could have sustained paradise with abundance and productivity. The pili tree is indigenous to the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea and Australia’s Northern Territories. But it is in the Philippines, more particularly in the fertile volcanic soils of Bicolandia, where it is grown commercially. The Department of Trade and Industry reports that “the Philippines is the only country capable of the commercial production and processing of pili-based food and byproducts, with Bicol supplying 80 percent of the total output volume.” The pili … [Read more...] about Pili: The ‘King of Nuts’ reigns in Bicol

Capitalizing on business strengths, adaptive measures during the pandemic

THE world is no stranger to disease outbreaks. Governments have borne the brunt of stemming the spread of communicable diseases throughout the years. Some of the most disastrous outbreaks that have obliterated huge portions of the world’s population include the Bubonic Plague, the Asian Flu and the Spanish Flu, the last one claiming hundreds of thousands of lives. As the Philippine government continues to wage war against an invisible enemy and to quell the spread of the Covid-19 virus through lockdowns and travel restrictions, the economic impact of the pandemic has left many businesses on the brink of shutting down operations. In the Philippines, economic projections remain bleak. According to revised estimates of the National Accounts of the Philippines as reported by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), the Philippine economy was projected to have sustained economic blows in 2020 due to the impacts of the pandemic. The country’s gross domestic product was estimated to have … [Read more...] about Capitalizing on business strengths, adaptive measures during the pandemic

Insights on the Community Pantry

If there is one thing that the Filipinos are good at – hands down – it is in our “bayanihan” spirit. The desire to help each other is just innately in our system. Proof of this is every time calamity strikes: people have the amazing skill in quickly organizing themselves, calling out for donations and bringing them to those in need. Come hell or high water, those relief goods will reach the intended recipients. The community pantry is a similar case, and is now closer to most of us – as it is now as the name suggests, all within our community. What started in Maginhawa, Quezon City has now been replicated literally across the country in such a short span of time. This community pantry has the essentials that a household would need such as noodles, sardines and other dry goods. The idea is simple: you get what you need. However, stories have now filled social media and local news with people getting more than their fair share, such as a woman in Kapitolyo taking two trays of eggs … [Read more...] about Insights on the Community Pantry
