By Brian Owens Apr. 10, 2017 , 5:45 PM To reinvigorate its science base, Canada needs to “reinvest” almost CAD$500 million in basic, investigator-led research over the next 4 years, according to a long-awaited review of the country’s science and innovation landscape released today. “A crucial shortcoming in the system is the level of support for independent investigator-initiated research,” David Naylor, a former president of the University of Toronto in Canada who led the nine-person review panel, told Science Insider. “That support has been squeezed for about a decade.” Naylor’s panel, which also included BlackBerry co-founder Mike Lazaridis and Nobel laureate Arthur McDonald, was commissioned last summer by Science Minister Kirsty Duncan to examine the state of fundamental science in Canada’s research institutions and to recommend improvements. UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson will use Queen Elizabeth II's speech scheduled for 11 May to announce a bill on countering hostile states, such as Russia and China, The Times reports. This weekend’s delayed April Oscars was not producers’ original plan (it probably wasn’t their sixth plan, frankly), and this will hopefully be the last time we stretch any awards season out this long. But at the end of the day, here we are, together at last, ready to see awards handed out in 23 categories, among a total of 56 nominated feature-length and short films. Watching all these nominated films has been an undertaking, though thankfully this year’s nominees were all much more available on streaming and VOD than ever before.
