For decades, survivors of childhood sexual abuse and their advocates have urged states to let them hold abusers accountable in civil court, no matter how long it’s been since the abuse. A bipartisan bill in the Colorado Legislature to do just that so far appears to have widespread approval, but it’s not without opposition from the Colorado Catholic Conference — a church embroiled in a sex abuse scandal in Colorado, the U.S. and around the world. There is no expiration date in Colorado to bring criminal charges against a person accused of child sex abuse, but the statute of limitations to sue an individual is only six years after a victim turns 18. Last year’s effort to change the latter failed. The renewed push to eliminate the statute of limitations for lawsuits against alleged child sex abusers saw an unanimous Senate vote this week — a vote Wheat Ridge Democratic Sen. Jessie Danielson called “historic.” But the bipartisan bill, which now heads to a House committee, doesn’t … [Read more...] about Catholic group opposes Colorado bill that would give child sex abuse survivors the ability to sue their abuser at any time

At least 102 Catholic clergy members who served in Colorado were accused of sexual abuse, more than double the number reported last month in a landmark state investigation , according to a lawyer who has represented sexual abuse victims in multiple states. The report accuses 59 additional clergymen — including those who served in religious orders — who were not included in the state attorney general’s investigation. That report, released in October, found that at least 166 children were sexually abused by 43 Catholic priests over the past 70 years. But attorney Jeff Anderson called the state investigation “far from complete.” Anderson, whose law firm is based in Minnesota, held a news conference Wednesday at the Denver Press Club to release findings from his investigation into Colorado Catholic clergy abuse. He was joined by multiple people who say they were abused by Catholic priests as children. In addition to naming the accused, Anderson and the abuse victims called on … [Read more...] about At least 102 Catholic clergy members accused of sexual abuse served in Colorado, new report says

The Boy Scouts of America’s Denver Area Council announced Wednesday it has merged with its Western Slope counterparts as the Scouts prepare to lose thousands of members when The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, widely known as the Mormon church, severs ties at the end of the year. The merger comes as shifting cultural norms have altered the Boy Scouts of America’s landscape as the organization opened its ranks to gay and female youths. The changes were a departure from the church’s more conservative stances on social issues, causing a split between the Scouts and the church who had been partners for more than a century. “The success of the Boy Scouts was largely about Mormon involvement in the program early on,” said Katy Mohrman, a University of Colorado Denver professor focusing on Mormon studies. “For the Scouts, I think it’s part of a more major shift of ‘What’s really our mission about and why are we here?’ ” The change will have a significant effect on the … [Read more...] about The Mormon church is severing ties with the Boy Scouts.
