TikTok asks judge to block US from barring app for download

WASHINGTON: TikTok asked a US judge on Wednesday (Sep 23) to block a Trump administration order that would require Apple Inc and Alphabet Inc's Google to remove the short video-sharing app for new downloads starting on Sunday. A federal judge in San Francisco on Saturday issued a preliminary injunction blocking a similar Commerce Department order from taking effect on Sunday on Tencent Holdings' WeChat app. US officials have expressed serious concerns that the personal data of as many as 100 million Americans that use the app was being passed on to China’s Communist Party government. On Saturday, the Commerce Department announced a one-week delay in the TikTok order, citing "recent positive developments" in talks over the fate of its US operations. TikTok said the restrictions "were not motivated by a genuine national security concern, but rather by political considerations relating to the upcoming general election." TikTok said if the order is not blocked "hundreds of … [Read more...] about TikTok asks judge to block US from barring app for download

Apple critics form coalition to challenge App Store fees

SAN FRANCISCO: A group of Apple's critics - including Spotify, Match Group and Fortnite creator Epic Games - have joined a nonprofit group that plans to advocate for legal and regulatory action to challenge the iPhone maker's App Store practices. Apple charges a commission of between 15 per cent to 30 per cent for apps that use its in-app payment system and sets out extensive rules that apps must comply with to appear in its App Store, which is the only way Apple allows consumers to download native apps onto devices such as the iPhone. Those practices have drawn criticism and formal legal complaints from some developers. The Coalition for App Fairness, structured as a nonprofit based in Washington, DC and Brussels, said it plans to advocate legal changes that would force Apple to change. Beyond Epic, Match and Spotify , other members include smaller firms such as Basecamp, Blix, Blockchain.com, Deezer, and Tile, along with developers from Europe including the European Publishers … [Read more...] about Apple critics form coalition to challenge App Store fees

Indonesia gives free Bali staycations to test tourism readiness

JAKARTA: Indonesia is offering free tours and staycations to 4,440 residents of its resort island of Bali, in a seven-week tourism dry-run to promote the international holiday hotspot and test its coronavirus health protocols. Authorities halted tourism in Indonesia's prime attraction in April to prevent the spread of the virus, devastating its economy. Though it reopened for local visitors in July, it is struggling to get back on track and has also seen infection numbers climb. Putu Astawa, chief of Bali's tourism agency, told Reuters that 4,440 participants would be separated into 12 groups and given two-night stays at resorts between Oct 7 and Nov 27 to test out measures designed to keep visitors safe. Woman fined for letting man enter her flat to study during circuit breaker

SINGAPORE: Despite knowing that social gatherings were prohibited during the "circuit breaker", a woman let a man into her flat to study and met another friend to pass her a birthday gift. For one count of allowing a person not from her household to enter her flat, and another of meeting others for a social gathering, 25-year-old Malaysian Mika She Yuan Wei was fined S$3,700 on Thursday (Sep 24). A third charge was taken into consideration. The authorities were alerted to the offences after the man, 26-year-old Malaysian Chiew Chin Wooi, posted photographs with captions online stating that he had left home while on medical leave to take an examination. He is at large after leaving Singapore on Jul 17 and failing to return to be charged alongside She last month. Arrest warrant issued for man who failed to return to Singapore to face COVID-19-related charges

SINGAPORE: A man who was set to face charges of breaking COVID-19 regulations by meeting a woman twice during the "circuit breaker" period did not show up in court to be charged on Friday (Aug 14). A warrant of arrest was issued for 25-year-old Chiew Chin Wooi after the Ministry of Health prosecutor told the court that Chiew had not returned to Singapore. Prosecutor Andre Moses Tan said Chiew was not in court and asked for a warrant of arrest to be issued. "We checked with (Immigration and Checkpoints Authority) this morning, and he has not returned to Singapore," he said, without specifying which country Chiew was currently in. Chiew was set to receive seven charges under the Infectious Diseases Act and the COVID-19 (Temporary Measures) (Control Order) Regulations. These are: One count of leaving his home without reasonable excuse; two counts of not wearing his mask outside his home; and four counts of exposing others to the risk of infection when he knew or suspected he … [Read more...] about Arrest warrant issued for man who failed to return to Singapore to face COVID-19-related charges
