The Health app, loaded onto all iPhones with iOS 8 and sitting prominently on the home screen, is clearly ambitious, but at the moment the majority of it’s intended abilities remain inactive or useless (at least without additional third party sensors, which don’t seem to exist yet). But for those with a new iPhone, the Health app can be useful right now, because it has the ability to track your steps like a pedometer, as well as flights of stairs climbed, and your walking / running distance. For best results with this Health app feature, you’ll need an newer model iPhone, anything newer than iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus is ideal, though iPhone 5S also has a motion coprocessor. Third party devices can also work, but we’re focusing on iPhone here. How to Turn iPhone into a Pedometer & Walking Distance Tracker Open Health app and go to the “Health Data” tab Tap on “Fitness” and enable the three currently functional sections: Select “Walking + Running Distance” and … [Read more...] about How to Track Steps & Mileage with iPhone to Make the Health App Useful

LTO, DOTr execs tagged as campaign fundraisers
MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Richard Gordon threatened to file plunder charges against transportation officials as he accused the Land Transportation Office (LTO) and the Department of Transportation (DOTr) of being turned into campaign fundraising centers. Gordon, chair of the Senate blue ribbon committee, said in a Senate radio program on Saturday that he had acceded to the request of Sen. Grace Poe to investigate private motor vehicle inspection centers (PMVICs) after his committee found grave irregularities in LTO operations. Gordon said the committee found ground to file plunder charges after its investigation of two irregular contracts in the supply of license plates and uncovered an alleged conspiracy to set up a monopoly in the sale of motorcycles. “It’s definitely plunder, with such huge amounts,” Gordon said. “P477 million in advance payments—that’s 10 times [the threshold amount for] plunder.” He was referring to the advance payments former LTO officials approved in … [Read more...] about LTO, DOTr execs tagged as campaign fundraisers

Stop the Mac Startup Sound on Older Macs with a Preference Panel
Mac’s have a very distinct startup sound that chimes whenever they boot, this is fine for most people but if you’re in a quiet office or library it can be very obnoxious to have the loud startup sound announcing to the world that you are on a Mac. Thankfully there’s a nice little utility that’s easy to install and works just like any other Preference Pane on your Mac. Aptly named StartupSound lets you adjust the volume of your Mac’s startup sound, and of course to stop it chiming and mute it entirely. Startup Sound Preference Pane Installation is really easy, you just need to double-click it to install the Preference Pane, then if you want to stop the Mac startup sound simply click the ‘Mute’ button alongside the volume slider. StartupSound works in Mac OS X 10.4, 10.5 and 10.6. Because of it’s ease of use and seamless integration into Mac OS X, I recommend StartupSound. However, I have heard reports that the StartupSound preference pane doesn’t work for everyone for … [Read more...] about Stop the Mac Startup Sound on Older Macs with a Preference Panel
Amazing Mac Uptime: 454 Days
Just when I thought my personal record uptime of 160 days on a MacBook server was exciting, one of our readers blew my uptime away… by almost a year! Seriously, Stephan Burlot ‘s personal record uptime? A staggering 454 days with his iBook. Apparently the iBook monitors his homes electrical usage and runs Mac OS X 10.4.11, and so there is rarely a need to reboot the machine, and it basically never gets turned off. Stable, reliable, trouble free. How awesome is that? If you didn’t know, uptime is just a measure of how long your computer has been running without a system reboot. A long system uptime is a geeky badge of honor of sorts, and obviously a nice sign of system stability. You can check your Mac uptime by typing ‘uptime’ into the Terminal . I’ve had some pretty impressive uptimes on Macs and Linux machines before, but at the moment this current Mac being typed on is at just 24 days… not bad, but certainly not into the hundreds or over a year! Obviously, stable … [Read more...] about Amazing Mac Uptime: 454 Days
