(CNN) You know times are a-changing when a famous toy spud is getting an upgrade—and for a very 21st-century reason. Allison Hope Hasbro has announced it is dropping the gendered honorific "Mr." from the brand name of its popular Potato Head toy. The move, a seemingly innocuous one that follows in the inclusive footsteps of other brands like Mattel and Target , has sparked the fury of the internet mob once again exposing its ugly underbelly of anti-LGBTQ hate. It's a child's toy. It's -- let's get real -- a potato. Why such an overreaction? We all know the answer. But for an additional reminder, we turn to Congress, which is having a slightly elevated, though at times inane, misinformed and Mr. Potato Head-level, debate about whether to extend equal … [Read more...] about Potato Head is getting with the times. Wall Street rally falters alongside global markets
M icro Focus rose after the software provider said it would reinstate its dividend following “solid progress” in its three-year turnaround plan. The share surge came despite the company, which employs 14,000 people, revealing it slipped almost $3bn (£2.2bn) into the red last year. Losses during the 12 months amounted to $2.97bn, a swing from a profit of $1.47bn a year earlier. The FTSE 250 company, which buys legacy software and then boosts profits through reducing costs, attributed much of its loss to a goodwill impairment. Micro Focus said the exceptional charge of $2.79bn was due to the group’s trading performance, as well as failing to meet the original projections it produced during its acquisition of HPE in 2017. It said it would bring in its final dividend at 15.5 cents per share. Stifel’s George O’Connor said the results were in line with previous guidance, adding that the company’s warnings of a tough macro environment would put a lid on any potential upgrades to … [Read more...] about Wall Street rally falters alongside global markets
Exclusive: Center for American Progress takes aim at Trump’s Wall Street-friendly rules
WASHINGTON: Washington's leading liberal think tank, which for years has shaped Democratic financial, economic and social policies, has begun drawing up a list of Wall Street-friendly rules that could be swiftly repealed if the party wins big in the election. The list from the Center for American Progress (CAP), shared exclusively with Reuters, offers the first glimpse at which of the financial rules by President Donald Trump's administration could be first on the chopping block if Democrats take the White House and the U.S. Senate on Nov. 3. They include rules that eased speculative bank investments, reduced swap capital cushions, and overhauled fair lending regulation, all of which, if reversed, could cost the financial industry tens of billions of dollars. According to CAP's analysis, these could be swiftly axed via the Congressional Review Act (CRA), a 1996 law that allows Congress to reverse new federal rules with a simple majority. "We need to reverse as much of the … [Read more...] about Exclusive: Center for American Progress takes aim at Trump’s Wall Street-friendly rules
Japan’s new PM Suga pledges to tackle COVID-19, kickstart economy
TOKYO: Japan's new Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga pledged on Wednesday (Sep 16) to keep coronavirus infections under control and kickstart an economy in recession, as Shinzo Abe left office after a record-breaking tenure. In his first remarks after being elected by parliament earlier on Wednesday, Suga emphasised his will be a cabinet of continuity, seeking to further the policies championed by Abe. "We need to carry forward the policies that the Abe administration was pushing, I feel that is the mission for which I have been called," Suga told reporters. He sidestepped questions on the possibility of a snap election to consolidate his position, saying that "what the public wants right now is that we manage to end the pandemic soon and at the same time we steadily restore the economy". "Achieving both the prevention of the spread of infection and rebuilding the economy is what they desire most... We hope to do our best on this issue first." He dwelled little on political … [Read more...] about Japan’s new PM Suga pledges to tackle COVID-19, kickstart economy

In many parts of the world, nearly two out of three people wear corrective eyewear. And lately, many of us have the same complaint: Wearing a mask makes our glasses fog. When we asked readers to send their questions about coronavirus, one of the most commonly asked questions was about how to solve the fogging problem. While the problem is new to us, it’s a daily challenge for healthcare workers. We asked them for suggestions on how to wear a mask while making sure we’re still able to see through our glasses. READ: Wearing glasses, facial hair: Do these increase the risk of COVID-19 infection? WHY DOES MY MASK MAKE MY GLASSES FOG? People who wear glasses already know that eyewear fogs when you walk out of an air-conditioned interior into the warm outdoor air, or when you open an oven door. When we wear a mask, warm breath can escape through the top edges, along the tops of our cheeks. When the hot air lands on cooler lenses, it creates condensation on the surface and a … [Read more...] about How to prevent your glasses from fogging when wearing a mask
