Theme parks, stadiums in California eligible to reopen as early as April 1

Video Player Close LOS ANGELES, March 5 (Xinhua) -- Theme parks and stadiums in the U.S. state of California will reopen as early as April 1 with capacity restrictions and other safety modifications, local authorities said Friday. Theme parks, including Disneyland and Universal Studios -- two of the most visited tourist attractions in Southern California, have been closed since March last year amid coronavirus fears. According to the updates of the state's Blueprint to a Safer Economy unveiled by the California Department of Public Health, theme parks in the counties in the purple tier, the most restrictive tier of California's four-tier, color-coded system for reopening, are not allowed to reopen. Yet theme parks in the red tier will be eligible to reopen at 15 percent capacity. Maximum capacity will be increased to 25 percent for theme parks in the counties in the orange tier and to 35 percent in the yellow tier. Phuket’s water supply running on empty

PHOTO: No, it’s not the moon, it’s Bang Neow Dam this week Phuket shuffles into the high season with meagre water reserves and no concrete, sustainable plans to meet the upcoming seasonal water demands. In April this year the local water authority shuffled uncomfortably about the crisis at the end of the 2018/2019 dry season, denying there was a problem whilst cutting supplies to many communities around Phuket, mostly around Chalong, Thalang and eastern suburbs of Phuket Town. Just shut off the water! On a tropical island where we’re surrounded by water, and with plenty of monsoonal rain falling on the island every year, it’s hard to imagine we could possibly be facing a water shortage. Especially after the crisis in March and April this year. But here we are. In a ‘would-have-been-funny-if-it-wasn’t-true’ moment in April, the Phuket Water Authority announced water restrictions for the island one day (an odds and evens water usage schedule), only to reverse their decision … [Read more...] about Phuket’s water supply running on empty

Flights to be delayed during Suvarnabhumi runway repairs

BANGKOK: Officials at Suvarnabhumi International Airport have drawn up a contingency plan to cope with ‘possible’ flight delays ‘if’ the runway and taxiway are ‘closed’ during maintenance work over the next two months. The repair work is due to begin this Friday (March 3). Officials have asked airlines to reserve more fuel to cover delays while waiting to land. General manager Sirote Duangratana said the airport was preparing for work on the eastern part of the runway’s surface and taxiway B1. “The time frame for the repairs has been set for 60 days, for completion on May 2, 2017,” Mr Sirote said. Louis Moser, chairman of the Airline Operators Committee (AOC), said about 102 airlines would be affected during the repairs. Referring to a meeting with the airlines, he said they needed to have fuel for an additional 60 to 90 minutes to ensure enough reserves while waiting for the signal to land from air traffic control. Mr Sirote said the airport would close a 935 meter stretch … [Read more...] about Flights to be delayed during Suvarnabhumi runway repairs

The East Bay Democrat’s suit was filed Friday in federal court in Washington. Florida beaches fill with Spring Breakers sparking fears of another deadly Covid spike – as experts say ‘stay away’

SPRING breakers heading to Florida have sparked fears of yet another Covid surge. College students were spotted in crowds on the sandy beaches, as nearly 2,000 Americans yesterday died from Covid-19. Pictures show people packed together in the sun, maskless and partying. Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber told WSVN he thinks "we're expecting a larger than typical spring break." Experts have warned against people traveling to Florida or other places as states work desperately to roll out vaccines and get as many people as possible the protection against the virus. "We understand there’s a lot of angst to get out and enjoy our beautiful weather and our beautiful beach, but we’re just asking for cooperation from our college students that do decide to come to Fort Lauderdale," Frank Sousa, the area's Police Assistant Interim Chief told WSVN. Raul Aguila, Miami Beach's city manager, said during a city council meeting that people heading to Florida "with an … [Read more...] about Florida beaches fill with Spring Breakers sparking fears of another deadly Covid spike – as experts say ‘stay away’
