SMC turns portion of head office land into urban farm

San Miguel Corp. is building its first urban farm within its sprawling head office complex in Ortigas to help build self-sufficiency among its support staff and help put agriculture back into the spotlight. Under the program, interested employees and workers doing support jobs will be given a plot of land in what will be dubbed as SMC’s “Malasakit Garden” for them to use as a space to grow whatever produce they like. They can then choose to either bring home their harvest, or to sell these for a profit at a small Malasakit Garden Farmers market stall to be set up at the complex. “In this time of pandemic, many Filipinos are looking for ways to earn extra income, or at the very least, make sure they have sufficient supply of food. Realizing the importance of food security, many are also exploring growing their own food. That is why we thought of this simple project to help our maintenance workers, as well as our own employees,” SMC President Ramon Ang said. Report: Bob Stoops replaces Urban Meyer on Big Noon Kickoff

Former Oklahoma coach and national champion Bob Stoops is the pick to replace Urban Meyer on Fox Sports' college football pre-game show, Big Noon Kickoff, the New York Post reports . Meyer left the broadcasting crew in January for the Jacksonville Jaguars job, leaving a crucial vacancy to Fox Sports' Saturday morning efforts. Stoops, who retired in June 2017 and was named to the College Football Hall of Fame in January, spent 18 seasons as the head coach at Oklahoma, where he won 190 games with the Sooners. Under Stoops' watch, Oklahoma captured 10 Big 12 championships and one national championship (2000). The Sooners additionally reached the national title game on three other occasions (2003, 2004, 2008) and qualified for the College Football Playoff in 2015. Stoops was a six-time Big 12 Coach of the Year selection and was named Walter Camp Coach of the Year in both 2000 and 2003. Stoops leaped out of retirement to lead the XFL's Dallas Renegades, but that league … [Read more...] about Report: Bob Stoops replaces Urban Meyer on Big Noon Kickoff

EU funds training for young Filipino peacebuilders

Amid recent attacks from violent extremist groups and incidents of conflict exacerbated by Covid-19 and the ongoing recession in the Philippines, a program funded by the European Union (EU) and supported by the Kofi Annan Foundation (KAF) was launched with the aim of training young Filipinos to promote peace and prevent violent extremism (PVE). Entitled Extremely Together (ET) Philippines – Panaghiusa, the program is locally led by non-profit organization KRIS and is part of a larger project to strengthen the capacities on peacebuilding of youth and civil society organizations (CSOs) in South and Southeast Asia. “According to the Global Terrorism Index 2020, the Philippines is 10th in the list of countries affected most by terrorism. It’s a problem that has been going on for the past decades and will continue to affect the lives of millions of Filipinos if left unchecked,” said Arizza Nocum, President and Co-Founder of KRIS. “Through Extremely Together Philippines, what we aim … [Read more...] about EU funds training for young Filipino peacebuilders

Wasps: The Astonishing Diversity of a Misunderstood Insect

Source: Egor Kamelev, Pexels free download. Last year essay I posted an essay called Some Truths About the Fascinating Lives of Wasps published in New Scientist by Richard Jones called "Not so Waspish," with the subtitle "They are one of the least-loved animals, but wasps deserve our affection. It's time for a rebranding." The online version is  titled " Wasps may benefit us as much as bees. Could we learn to love them? " with the subtitle "We love to hate wasps, but they pollinate flowers, kill off pests and their venom might even help us treat cancer." 1 I learned a lot about wasps from Jones' essay and the references he provides, and wanted to learn more about these misunderstood insects. So, I was pleased to read a book called Wasps: The Astonishing Diversity of a Misunderstood Insect by Eric R. Eaton, a writer, editor, and consultant who has worked as an entomologist for many institutions. 2 Here's what he had to say about his highly informative and … [Read more...] about Wasps: The Astonishing Diversity of a Misunderstood Insect

Ardern not revealing cannabis stance may have been ‘decisive factor’ in referendum result

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s decision not to reveal her position on the cannabis debate during election campaigning could have been a “decisive factor” in last year’s referendum, academics believe. Ardern and her Labour Party did not take a public stance on the legalisation of cannabis during 2020's election campaign, despite facing repeated questions over it. Efforts to legalise cannabis were ultimately defeated, with 48.4 per cent of voters in favour and 50.7 per cent against. “Referendum voting is often more volatile and unpredictable than voting in elections based on party politics,” said researchers Marta Rychert and Chris Wilkins, both of Massey University's College of Health.
