EXCLUSIVE: The late Audrey Wells was a prolific screenwriter and director whose work focused on strong female characters, from 2003’s Under the Tuscan Sun and 1999’s Guinevere through to 2018’s The Hate U Give . That trend continued with Over the Moon , Netflix ’s animated musical about based on a Chinese myth about a determined 14-year-old girl named Fei Fei who, coping with the loss of her mother, builds a rocket ship and blasts off, hoping to meet a mythical moon goddess. Wells was brought on to pen the screenplay in March 2016; by that time she had already known that she had cancer and that the script would be her final work. After a trip to China for inspiration she turned in a draft nine months later. Peilin Chou, the producer who brought Wells aboard the project, remembered weeping after reading it. Housewife Finds Fulfillment in Translating Kids’ Letters for Charity
November 30, 2019 08:18 Chung Yeo-jin (47), a Korean housewife, has translated 4,660 letters from English to Korean over the last seven years as a volunteer for Christian charity Compassion Korea. The letters were sent to sponsors in Korea from beneficiaries around the world. After graduation, Chung at first worked for a large conglomerate, but she quit her job 22 years ago when she married a soldier because her husband's profession required her to move every one to two years. To give her something to do while her two children were at school she started volunteering to translate letters. "It wasn't easy to find a job again because of the long period of time I had been out of work. But I wanted to do something to help others even if I didn't make any money." She searched the Internet and discovered the translation opportunity for Compassion Korea. "I'd long been interested in foreign languages and was immediately drawn to the wanted ad," she recalls. It was not easy … [Read more...] about Housewife Finds Fulfillment in Translating Kids’ Letters for Charity
Letters: Renaming schools, library and more is an Orwellian retreat from history
It looks like George Orwell was off by 36 years in his classic novel "Nineteen Eighty-Four." If you have not read it since high school, it is about erasing parts of history Big Brother does not want the public to remember. Fast forward to 2020. In Baton Rouge, we are erasing parts of our history by renaming libraries and streets, all in the name of removing alleged racism. Lee High School, formerly Robert E. Lee High School, is being renamed. Again. LSU’s Middleton Library was renamed with no real regard to who Middleton actually was. Nationally, historical monuments of Andrew Jackson’s and Christopher Columbus and a multitude of other historical statues have been vandalized, all in the name of ending racism. This present attitude suggests we not stop here. In our own city, Shenandoah neighborhood streets are named after historic figures and battlefields: General Forrest Avenue, Confederate, Stonewall Drive. These too need to be changed so no one is offended. An estimated 40 … [Read more...] about Letters: Renaming schools, library and more is an Orwellian retreat from history
‘My five-year-old daughter wrote me a persuasive letter requesting we change her name’
To celebrate women's history month, one mum has shared a brilliant story on TikTok, which she believes shows why her daughter will one day go down in history. The parent, named Bri, made a video explaining that her daughter wants to change her name - and is taking action to try and make it happen. Posting under the username @bri_mom3, she told how she and her husband named their little girl Charlie Paige. Charlie is now five-years-old, doesn't like her name and is desperate to be called Charlotte instead of Charlie. Bri said: "So my little lady is named Charlie, Charlie Paige. I love her name, we chose her name, she looks like a Charlie. She is just my Charlie girl. "But she doesn't like it and at five-years-old she wrote me a persuasive letter on why we should change her name to Charlotte. "Then she did some research and she researched that in order to change your name, you have to go to the court, you have to pay around $200 in the state of Indiana, it has to be … [Read more...] about ‘My five-year-old daughter wrote me a persuasive letter requesting we change her name’
LCMC chief: Ring a bell for heroes, but also get a vaccination
It’s been one year since our first COVID-19 patient was admitted to the LCMC Health family of hospitals. One year since our lives were fundamentally changed in the blink of an eye. The pandemic has taken a heavy toll, reshaping how we live, how we interact, how we work. For some of us our lives were put on hold, forever in a wait-and-see pattern. For others, their services were desperately needed, and they courageously rose to the challenge. So many of our community members put their lives at risk to make our lives as normal as possible — nurses, doctors, respiratory therapists, teachers, EMS and police officers, just to name a few. Their resilience, compassion, and ingenuity have created another definition of the word hero, selflessly working endless hours to be our guiding light as the pandemic surged. I often look back over the past year and am humbled by what this community can achieve when faced with such incredible adversity. To all our heroes and the countless local … [Read more...] about LCMC chief: Ring a bell for heroes, but also get a vaccination
