Protesters, riot police continue to square off in Hong Kong

HONG KONG: Crowds filled a city park in Hong Kong on Tuesday (Sep 3) afternoon in the latest organised demonstration, but tensions flared in the evening when small groups of protesters played a cat-and-mouse chase around the city with riot police. Video of police chasing and tackling a teenager at the Prince Edward subway station just before midnight on Tuesday was widely shared by opposition politicians and activists. The boy apparently had a seizure and fainted after six officers subdued him in full view of a crowd snapping pictures and shooting video. Police dragged him away before first aid was administered, and eventually the teen was rushed to a hospital on a stretcher with neck support. Earlier, Hong Kong's Chief Executive Carrie Lam insisted she had no intention of stepping down after an audio recording emerged of her saying she wanted to quit over three months of unrest in the southern Chinese city. Hong Kong has endured dozens of sometimes violent protests … [Read more...] about Protesters, riot police continue to square off in Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific warns against protest outside its premises

HONG KONG: Hong Kong carrier Cathay Pacific Airways warned against what it described as an illegal protest planned outside its offices on Wednesday (Aug 28) and that it had zero tolerance for "violent activities" and any staff member who took part. Cathay has been caught in the crosswinds between authorities in Beijing and anti-government protesters who have staged sometimes violent demonstrations since June that have grown to pose the city's biggest challenge since it returned to Chinese rule in 1997. NZX inches up 0.35 per cent, early boost from Wall Street wanes

A surge on Wall Street gave the New Zealand sharemarket an early boost on Tuesday, although strength ebbed towards the end of the day. The benchmark S&P/NZX50 Index closed up 0.35 per cent, or 42.68 points, at 12,344.49. That followed a 0.6 per cent gain on Monday . “There was better vaccine news in the United States, also we’ve seen those bond yields pull back a bit, allowing the tech sector to rally overnight,” said Peter McIntyre, Craigs Investment Partners investment adviser. However, Asian markets were more subdued, he said. Man who had stand-off with police near Woodlands Checkpoint pleads guilty to armed robbery and other offences

SINGAPORE: A man shown in viral videos in a stand-off with police near Woodlands Checkpoint last year pleaded guilty on Wednesday (Aug 28) to a variety of charges including armed robbery, drug-related offences and traffic violations. Chew Guan Mong, a 45-year-old Singaporean, pleaded guilty to 16 charges including robbing a woman of her car, taking methamphetamine and vandalism. Another 25 charges will be taken into consideration for sentencing. The incident that resulted in the stand-off started on the afternoon of Jan 5, 2018, when Chew was driving along the Pan Island Expressway towards Tuas. He had earlier been banned from driving from August 2004 to August 2034, but drove a rented black Toyota Camry in a zig-zag pattern anyway. Near the exit to Clementi Road, he swerved onto the path of an SMRT bus, side-swiping it, before veering to the left and bouncing off the wall, said Deputy Public Prosecutor Andre Chong. After colliding into the centre guard railings and a wall … [Read more...] about Man who had stand-off with police near Woodlands Checkpoint pleads guilty to armed robbery and other offences

Tennis: Nadal dominates Medvedev in Montreal for 35th Masters title

MONTREAL: Rafael Nadal completed a 6-3, 6-0 demolition of Russian Daniil Medvedev to win in Montreal on Sunday (Aug 11) and extend his record haul of Masters 1000 titles. The world number two secured his 35th Masters crown, pulling clear by two in that category from Novak Djokovic, who has won 33 of the elite tournaments. Claycourt king Nadal successfully defended a hard court title for the first time in his career. "It was important to start the match in a good shape," the 18-time Grand Slam winner said. "He came in playing so well, playing a lot of matches the last weeks," Nadal added of Medvedev, who was runner-up to Nick Kyrgios in Washington last week." Nadal, in contrast, had played just three hard court matches since starting his build up to the US Open this week - reaching the final on a walkover when injured Gael Monfils pulled out of their scheduled semi-final. "I played a solid match, my best of the week so far without a doubt," Nadal said. "I did a lot of … [Read more...] about Tennis: Nadal dominates Medvedev in Montreal for 35th Masters title
