Tennis: Nadal dominates Medvedev in Montreal for 35th Masters title
MONTREAL: Rafael Nadal completed a 6-3, 6-0 demolition of Russian Daniil Medvedev to win in Montreal on Sunday (Aug 11) and extend his record haul of Masters 1000 titles. The world number two secured his 35th Masters crown, pulling clear by two in that category from Novak Djokovic, who has won 33 of the elite tournaments. Claycourt king Nadal successfully defended a hard court title for the first time in his career. "It was important to start the match in a good shape," the 18-time Grand Slam winner said. "He came in playing so well, playing a lot of matches the last weeks," Nadal added of Medvedev, who was runner-up to Nick Kyrgios in Washington last week." Nadal, in contrast, had played just three hard court matches since starting his build up to the US Open this week - reaching the final on a walkover when injured Gael Monfils pulled out of their scheduled semi-final. "I played a solid match, my best of the week so far without a doubt," Nadal said. "I did a lot of … [Read more...] about Tennis: Nadal dominates Medvedev in Montreal for 35th Masters title
China surprises with best export growth since March, but imports remain weak
BEIJING: China's exports unexpectedly returned to growth in July on improved global demand despite escalating US trade pressure, but the rebound may be short-lived as Washington prepares to slap even more tariffs on Chinese goods. Analysts say a sharp drop in the yuan currency this week may offer only limited help for Chinese exporters, who are facing additional US levies next month, shrinking profit margins, and sputtering demand worldwide. July exports rose 3.3 per cent from a year earlier, the fastest since March and more than the most optimistic estimate in a Reuters poll, customs data showed on Thursday (Aug 8). Analysts had expected a 2.0 per cent drop after June's 1.3 per cent fall. But imports remained weak, declining 5.6 per cent and highlighting sluggish domestic demand as China's economy struggles to get back on firmer footing. Still, the drop was less than an expected 8.3 per cent and June's 7.3 per cent. The better-than-expected trade readings helped buoy Asian … [Read more...] about China surprises with best export growth since March, but imports remain weak

Police investigating Joseph Schooling’s ex-representative for non-delivery of ICC football tickets
SINGAPORE: The police are investigating Joseph Schooling's former representative Hafidz Ja'afar about claims he did not provide the tickets he was offering for sale to a recent International Champions Cup (ICC) football game played in Singapore. "The police confirm that a report was lodged and investigations are ongoing," Singapore Police Force (SPF) told CNA on Thursday (Jul 25). This comes after a 37-year-old man, who only wanted to be known as David, filed a police report against Mr Hafidz. In the report seen by CNA, the man claims that he paid Mr Hafidz for tickets to the Manchester United vs Inter Milan game on Saturday, but did not receive them. Separately, Schooling's swim school posted on Facebook on Wednesday evening that Mr Hafidz, who was a manager at the school, was "no longer in the services" of the company. "He is not authorised to transact any business, collect any monies or act in any capacity whatsoever on behalf of our company," Swim Schooling wrote.
