Allow taxis, private-hire drivers to use bus stops and lanes: Industry associations

SINGAPORE: Taxi drivers and private-hire drivers could be allowed to pick up and drop off passengers at bus stops and bus lanes in the future, if recommendations from two industry associations are accepted. The recommendations by the National Private Hire Vehicles Association (NPHVA) and National Taxi Association (NTA) are in response to a call by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) for feedback on the Land Transport Master Plan 2040. The master plan should "actively involve chauffeured services as part of a seamless and well-connected public transport network", the two associations said in media release on Wednesday (Dec 19). They reasoned that with Singapore facing an ageing population, workplace decentralisation, a rise in freelance workers or workers with dynamic work arrangements and families with growing childcare demand, there will be a need for more flexible or shorter transportation. "Rigidity arising from fixed routes, fixed locations of MRT stations and bus stops … [Read more...] about Allow taxis, private-hire drivers to use bus stops and lanes: Industry associations

US stocks rise modestly after two straight routs

NEW YORK: Wall Street stocks finished modestly higher on Tuesday (Dec 18) but worries about slumping oil prices and a likely Federal Reserve interest rate hike limited the gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 82.66 points (0.35 per cent) to 23,675.64. The broad-based S&P 500 ended up a hair at 2,546.16, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index won 30.18 points (0.45 per cent) to 6,783.91. After two straight routs, US stocks had opened solidly higher and pushed upward through the early afternoon. But stocks briefly tumbled into the red amid worries that ongoing fights on Capitol Hill could lead to a government shutdown. Analysts are also watching for Wednesday's Fed decision, which comes amid intense pressure from President Donald Trump on the US central bank to keep rates low. Most analysts still expect the central bank to lift interest rates but the stock market's pullback in December has boosted the still-slim odds the Fed will take no action. "The … [Read more...] about US stocks rise modestly after two straight routs

The Highs and Lows of NYTW’s

Fredi Walker-Browne and friends at NYTW’s benefit. Photo: Jon Burklund/ZANNI Productions New York Theatre Workshop punches far above its weight. The gutsy little theater on East 4th Street, just in recent seasons, has produced shows like Slave Play, Once , and Hadestown, all of which later traveled uptown to play successfully on Broadway. Its primary impact on the theatrical Zeitgeist, though, struck way back in 1996, with the super-blockbuster Rent , Jonathan Larson’s rock adaptation of Puccini’s La Bohème. To celebrate the show’s silver anniversary, NYTW organized its annual fundraising benefit as a kind of birthday celebration. Between solicitations for donations, it invited current workshop collaborators to talk about Rent ’s impact on their work, Zoomed with old cast and crew members to share their memories of making the show, and presented new interpretations of a few Rent songs by the current crop of Broadway stars. Daphne Rubin-Vega videoed in, looking … [Read more...] about The Highs and Lows of NYTW’s
