Vietnamese in U.S. rattled by rising hate crimes against Asians

Walking their dog after dinner has always been a favorite daily activity of Tho Pham and his wife, a Vietnamese couple who live with their 39-year-old son in Garden Grove City, California. But not in the last few months as the wave of anti-Asian violence and harassment has terrified him. "I do not dare go out without my children because I am afraid someone will knock me to the ground or stab me to death just because I am Asian," he laments, adding that the hate crimes have disrupted his daily life. Many other Vietnamese share his apprehension, especially older people. Among Democrats, it was an article of faith that the election of Joe Biden would trigger resounding cheers throughout the world and expressions of profound gratitude that America was resuming its historic role as leader of the free world. It didn’t happen. Although America’s allies and enemies shed few tears over the electoral demise of Donald Trump Donald Trump Trump announces new tranche of endorsements DeSantis, Pence tied in 2024 Republican poll Lawmakers demand changes after National Guard troops at Capitol sickened from tainted food MORE , it is abundantly clear that there are deeper explanations for the fact that the world today is looking at America through very different eyes — a reappraisal that dramatically accelerated during the stunning events that characterized the United States’s “annus horribilis” of 2020. Evidence of this remarkable attitudinal change is found in the recent survey by the European Council on Foreign Relations of public … [Read more...] about Biden’s ‘America is Back’ pledge leaves the world unimpressed

The 1.83-meter striped dolphin (Latin name Stenella coeruleoalba) washed up on Patong beach on June 27. Villagers wrapped him in wet towels and carried him by pick-up to the PMBC. Diamond appeared to be recuperating but suffered a convulsion yesterday evening and died soon afterwards, Supot Chantrapornsyl, Marine Biologist at the PMBC, told the Gazette today. “I was contacted by Governor CEO Pongpayome Vasaputi on Friday about plans to release the dolphin at Patong beach today, because many people were asking about him,” K Supot added. An autopsy showed the lungs of the dolphin had turned black and its liver had hardened. “We presume that he died because of the lung problem,” K … [Read more...] about Luck runs out for Diamond the dolphin
