GE2020: Workers’ Party introduces five more prospective candidates
SINGAPORE: The Workers’ Party on Friday (Jun 26) introduced five more candidates that it plans to field in the 2020 General Election. There are three familiar faces, including former Non-Constituency Member of Parliament (NCMP) Dennis Tan, as well as Mr Dylan Ng and Mr Ron Tan who both contested in the 2015 polls. The other two are new to elections: 44-year-old associate professor of economics Jamus Lim and 26-year-old social activist Raeesah Khan, who is the party’s youngest candidate. This was the WP’s second candidate introduction session. At the first session on Thursday, it unveiled four candidates, including former NCMP Yee Jenn Jong and advertising associate director Nicole Seah, who ran in the 2011 election under the National Solidarity Party. Parti Liyani case: Ministerial statement next month will address MPs’ questions, says Desmond Tan
SINGAPORE: A ministerial statement which is expected to be made during next month's Parliament sitting will address questions raised by Members of Parliament (MPs) on the Parti Liyani case, said Minister of State for Home Affairs Desmond Tan. Speaking in Parliament on Monday (Oct 5), Mr Tan was responding to questions from MPs on the case. A total of 14 parliamentary questions were filed on this. "The agencies have considered the High Court judgment and are conducting reviews," said Mr Tan. "These reviews are still in progress." After the reviews are completed, Minister for Home Affairs and Law K Shanmugam will address the questions raised by members in a ministerial statement. This is expected to be done at the November sitting. In comments provided to CNA last Friday, Mr Shanmugam said he will make the statement after reviews by the police and the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) are completed. South Korea ruling party wins parliamentary majority amid COVID-19 pandemic
SEOUL: South Korea's ruling party won a landslide victory in Wednesday's general election, partial results showed, after the coronavirus pandemic turned the political tide in President Moon Jae-in's favour. The country uses a mix of first-past-the-post seats and proportional representation, but even before all the individual constituencies were decided, Moon's Democratic party had taken 163 seats in the 300-member National Assembly, an absolute majority. Its sister party was expected to win another 17 proportional representation seats - due to be declared later Thursday - for a total of 180. The main conservative opposition United Future Party (UFP) and its satellite party were forecast to secure a total of 97 seats. Turnout was 66.2 per cent , higher than any parliamentary elections held in the South since 1992.
