“We expect that at some point, maybe next week, the president of the council will tell his colleagues that there is no consensus on how to proceed, and most likely, a majority of council members do not believe the U.S. has the right to trigger snapback. And under those circumstances, he cannot reasonably be expected to oversee the process set out in Resolution 2231,” Gowan said. … [Read more...] about Trump: US Will Seek Snapback of Sanctions on Iran at UN

Kellyanne Conway Is the Real First Lady of Trump’s America
Besides, as everyone in this chaotic White House will tell you, when it comes to this president, having all the facts all the time is virtually impossible. “It’s very hard to be in the Trump loop,” one former Trump adviser said, both owing to his “unpredictable” personality as well as the “insular nature of his senior staff.” (About the president’s perspective on the staff scrambling and turf wars, another adviser, who has known Trump since the 1990s, added, “I don’t think the president cares. I think he likes the infighting. I think his attitude is, let’s see if you’re tough. Let’s see who’s tough.”) Being informed, then, is a matter of proximity — which explains why, unlike on most campaigns, Trump’s managers and strategists traveled the country with him on his private Boeing 757, for fear that staying behind in the Trump Tower war room could mean losing their influence. “There … [Read more...] about Kellyanne Conway Is the Real First Lady of Trump’s America
Trump’s Tweet Won’t Start a Nuclear War — But the Real Danger Is Still Terrifying
I’m not worried about a nuclear exchange with Pyongyang this weekend or next. The more absurd the public exchanges become, the easier it will be for cooler heads on both sides to prevail — in the short term, at least. We now know that President Nixon did not, in fact, have control of the nuclear launch codes during a period when his closest aides judged him to be impaired and unreliable. Perceptions of erratic behavior also played a part in the palace coup that drove Nikita Khrushchev, the Soviet leader whose actions sparked the Cuban Missile Crisis, out of office. Current and former U.S. defense officials have gone out of their way, in congressional testimony and other public forums — pretty much anytime a reporter asks — to make it clear that they do think about receiving illegal or immoral orders, and how they might respond. Even Kim Jong-un, who said last fall that a “frightened dog barks louder,” seems to understand that these exchanges with … [Read more...] about Trump’s Tweet Won’t Start a Nuclear War — But the Real Danger Is Still Terrifying
Again, a call to re-jig the nation’s security system
It is true that Nigeria’s constitution guarantees every citizen the right to live in any part of the country the citizen chooses to live, but it is also true that the moment an individual or group of persons become criminals in any place they reside, they naturally lose that right. … [Read more...] about Again, a call to re-jig the nation’s security system
US election security groups call 2020 election ‘most secure in American history’
Neither the White House nor the CISA responded to a request for comment. On Twitter, Virginia Sen. Mark Warner praised Krebs' work at the CISA. "He is one of the few people in this Administration respected by everyone on both sides of the aisle. There is no possible justification to remove him from office," Warner, a Democrat, said in the tweet. … [Read more...] about US election security groups call 2020 election ‘most secure in American history’
