Three years later, I find myself thinking about her often, and differently than I did when she was alive. A middle-aged orphan with two wonderful siblings, I learn more about her as I get older, and as her powerful personality no longer shades my insight into our relationship. In a long period of depression in my 30s, I had therapy with a man who occasionally presented pithy observations, like this one in response to my struggle to reconcile my mother’s loving intentions and her failure to give me the support I needed: “Parents typically do the best they can.” As I’ve noted elsewhere in this blog, my mother had an intense relationship with her father who, like her, was fiercely intelligent and could be devastating with his teasing and wit. A law professor fascinated by Lizzie Borden (the woman acquitted of murdering her parents with an ax), Grandpa … [Read more...] about Does Your Parents’ Failure Mean They Didn’t Love You?

US Rejecting JCPOA ‘Doesn’t Mean Other Countries Will Pull Out’ – Professor
Sputnik: If the US does withdraw from the deal what consequences can it have on the region? Nader Habibi: It depends on the reaction of Iran and also the next steps that the US might take. Just by announcing that the US is no longer a party to JCPOA it doesn’t mean that other parties would also automatically pull out. Iran has threatened to pull out, but if Iran pulls out without reactivating its nuclear programs the initial reaction to Iran will not be as strong to cause a destabilization in the region. But if Iran actually reengages its nuclear enrichment program , then we might see reaction by Israel and United States trying to impose more economic pressure on Iran. If the US pulls out, it will increase the risk of doing business with Iran for European countries, for Asian countries. So we might see an increased economic pressure on Iran indirectly, even though European countries might still remain committed to JCPOA. Republican South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham said Sunday that a trio of Democratic bills passed by the House could radically change America. “This is a trilogy of radical policy and I hope the American people are paying attention because if you’re not, you’re going to wake up in a few years and your country will not be the nation you remember it being,” Graham told Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures.” WATCH: The senator first attacked the $1.9 trillion COVID stimulus bill that was passed by the Senate early Saturday. This is out of control liberalism and in this bill … most of the money’s not spent this year: 90% of it has nothing to do with COVID,” Graham said, noting that the legislation will forgive loans for farmers but only if they’re “socially disadvantaged, if you’re African-American, some other minority, but … [Read more...] about ‘Trilogy Of Radical Policy’: Lindsey Graham Says Three Democratic Bills Mean America ‘Will Not Be The Nation You Remember’
‘Culture of misogyny’ could mean men get more lenient sentences – commissioners warn
A "culture of misogyny in the criminal justice system" could lead to men getting away with more lenient sentences, the victims' commissioner and domestic abuse commissioner for England and Wales have said. In a joint letter to Home Secretary Priti Patel, Lord Chancellor Robert Buckland and Attorney General Michael Ellis, the commissioners have called for an independent review for every domestic homicide. They are also urging the government to review murder and manslaughter sentences in domestic abuse cases. In the letter, Domestic Abuse Commissioner Nicole Jacobs and Victims' Commissioner Dame Vera Baird QC call for "greater recognition of the devastation caused by domestic homicide" and a "programme of work to address deficiencies across the criminal justice system and statutory services". They write: "We have seen the effects of a culture of misogyny throughout the criminal justice system, to the detriment of women across England and Wales. Changing Your Story: How to Live a Happy Life
Some people just do not seem to be able to stop themselves from re-initiating a conflict, or having the last word, or leaving a difficult interaction with a loved one in a loud and tumultuous exit. Other people just go numb, do not know what to say, and become non-responsive in an argument. After the dust settles, I often hear people exclaim, “That’s just how I am,” or “that’s just me,” or “I just can’t seem to help myself, I doubt if I’ll ever be able to change.” When people say this, the first thing I ask is, “Who or what does the word ‘I’ refer to in those statements?” “Who or what is the “I” that cannot change?” The answer to this question is pivotal to what any given person will be willing to do to initiate a change process in their own life. For change to happen, you need to know who or what you are actually trying to change. Try answering this question (say it out loud or write it down): what are you? If you answered this question with, “I am a woman, man, … [Read more...] about Changing Your Story: How to Live a Happy Life
