Pass the CORE Act, please Re: “Three acts in Congress to preserve, grow and heal our public lands,” April 11 editorial Your recent editorial made some really important points about the Colorado Outdoor Recreation and Economy (CORE) Act. First was that the public lands package in 2019 passed over the CORE Act, despite the fact that each portion of the bill was a decade in the making, by residents from the specific regions. These are true community-driven proposals, evidenced by overwhelming support from local governments and affected stakeholders including ranchers, conservationists, private property and water rights holders, businesses, and many more. That’s why I, as a small business owner in Durango, also support the CORE Act, and why I extend my thanks to Sen. John Hickenlooper for joining Sen. Michael Bennet in sponsoring this legislation. People from all over the state visit my shop to find the gear they need to visit these very areas, adding to the outdoor recreation … [Read more...] about Letters: Pass the CORE Act, please (4/17/21)

Florida House passes bill banning transgender female athletes from women’s teams
Florida's state House on Wednesday passed a bill that would ban transgender female athletes from joining women’s public school and college sports teams. The “Fairness in Women’s Sports Act,” if signed into law, would require that sports team eligibility be based on a student's “biological sex,” which refers to the sex assigned at birth. The bill adds that “under certain circumstances,” schools and institutions would be required to “request a certain health examination and consent form or other statement from the student’s health care provider to verify the student’s biological sex.” ADVERTISEMENT The intent of the legislation, according to the text, is to “maintain opportunities for female athletes to demonstrate their skill, strength, and athletic abilities,” in addition to providing them with opportunities to receive various recognitions and accolades. The bill also aims to “promote sex equality by requiring the designation of separate sex-specific athletic … [Read more...] about Florida House passes bill banning transgender female athletes from women’s teams
Civic groups urge Congress to pass new stimulus bill
Amid the rapid rise of community pantries across the country, civic groups on Monday called on Congress to hold a special session for a new stimulus bill and aid for poor households, arguing that mutual aid cannot and should not be a substitute for legitimate government response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In separate statements, groups like Pamalakaya, Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas and Bayan all said Congress should deliberate on Bayanihan 3 and appropriate funds for another round of social amelioration. Realign funds To help fund these programs, Congress can opt to realign funds for infrastructure and counterinsurgency projects to cash aid for the poor, said Renato Reyes, secretary general of Bayan. “The rise of community pantries all over the country is the incontrovertible proof that government aid for the poor during the pandemic is sorely lacking,” he said in a statement. “Mutual aid is a temporary measure to fill gaps in the delivery of aid to the people. At the end of … [Read more...] about Civic groups urge Congress to pass new stimulus bill

How to check a Chromebook auto-update expiration date before you buy
If you're thinking of passing a gently used Chromebook on to a friend or family member, or if you're considering buying a used or older Chromebook, there's an important date you need to check first. You may have seen mentions of a Chromebook's expiration date or Auto Update Expiration date . Because Google can only guarantee Chrome OS and browser feature support on non-Google hardware for so long, every device currently has a date on which it stops receiving updates, its AUE date. Google has been working on extending these dates and, as of November 2020 , it announced new models would have longer lives, which roughly translates to anywhere from 7 to 8 years or more. However, the date varies from device to device and isn't necessarily determined by when the device was released or by when you bought it. The Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 2 , for example, was released this March and has an AUE of June 2028. That's a good long time for a new Chromebook, but things are trickier when … [Read more...] about How to check a Chromebook auto-update expiration date before you buy
