‘I swapped CBBC and being on shows like Dancing on Ice for teaching – and I love it’

When the phone stopped ringing and work dried up, TV presenter Michael Underwood knew he had to make some life changes. So he swapped the studio for the classroom and is now inspiring the next generation as a primary school teacher. Schools are finally due back in the classroom next week, but while the past year has been hard on everyone, Michael has found his old skills have come in handy with remote learning. “I’ve really enjoyed it. It’s almost like being on camera,” he says. “I feel particularly sorry for working parents who have been finding this time very stressful. It’s also been incredibly challenging teaching during lockdown. It’s amazing what teachers are doing when it comes to remote learning. "If you don’t realise what teachers have been doing, then you might be thinking: Oh this is easy for them - they don’t have to go into school, they’re just sat at home just churning out some lessons they’ve already done before. But it’s actually been a lot of work. “The … [Read more...] about ‘I swapped CBBC and being on shows like Dancing on Ice for teaching – and I love it’

Will Eisner and the Secret History of the Graphic Novel

Art by Will Eisner. Photo: Abrams Books Graphic novels — that is, long-form narratives done in the style of comic books — have rocked the literary world in recent decades. Works like Maus , Persepolis , and Fun Home have garnered Pulitzers, given birth to film and theater adaptations, topped best-seller lists, and elevated comics art from a disdained medium into an acclaimed one. But who, exactly, invented the graphic novel? Debates over its origins have raged ever since the term graphic novel first came into vogue in the late 1970s. But new research is bringing us closer to an answer. The origin of the graphic novel is a bit of a detective story, and a principal suspect is the man profiled in the upcoming book Will Eisner: Champion of the Graphic Novel , written by longtime comics writer, editor, historian, and former president of DC Comics Paul Levitz. Eisner, who died in 2005 at the age of 87, was nothing short of a titan in the world of comics. He was a … [Read more...] about Will Eisner and the Secret History of the Graphic Novel

Camping under the rubber trees

Dozens of camping trips and campgrounds have arisen to attract these kind of social media users. Before Myanmar receives its first round of vaccinations, many have posted pictures of their camping holidays. Besides evening barbeques, many include a whole range of activities like fishing, cycling and trekking – everything you need to keep you happy and healthy during the pandemic. Being out in the open, you also don’t have to worry too much about curfews and social distancing – providing you go with your friends or family. One such campground is called "Mother's Village", and it became our girls-night-out destination for me and three of my best high school friends. Located beside the Yangon-Mandalay Highway Road, Mother's Village Campground was fully booked when we arrived for our one-night stay. After passing the deserted Aung Mingalar Highway Bus Terminal, our group quickly caught up to a line of trucks and cars waiting along the road. Just as we thought we’d left … [Read more...] about Camping under the rubber trees

PHOTO: Malaysia’s Kuching on Borneo this week “Hundreds of schools shut as forest-fire haze blankets SE Asia.” Huge fires are raging across vast swathes of Indonesia’s rainforests – some of the world’s biggest – with toxic smog shutting hundreds of schools. Massive jungle areas in Sumatra and Borneo island are ablaze as thousands of personnel battle to quell the fires, frequently started to clear land for crop plantations. In Indonesia the number of hotspots – areas at risk of fires – has soared in parts, including on Borneo which the country shares with Malaysia and Brunei. Air quality has dropped to “unhealthy” levels in and around KL, according to the government’s air pollutant index, and the skyline has been shrouded in thick smog, while haze also hung over Singapore. In southern Thailand there has also been alarm as the smoke haze has started to build this week. Residents are being advised to stay indoors ar wear face-masks outside as a precaution. The smell of … [Read more...] about Smoke haze affecting neighbouring countries to Sumatra and Borneo islands
