Parents can get £150 to help cover school uniform costs as children return in England

Thousands of parents across the country can get support to help subsidise their child's uniform costs as schools reopen across England today. The School Uniform Grant offers qualifying households as much as £150 per child to help with the expenses associated with having a young person in full time education. It's part of the Education Act 1980 and is offered by the Government to help families on low incomes manage their budgets. It comes as figures show 12.5million pieces of uniform will go into landfill today as parents realise their little ones have shot up since lockdowns began. "It costs a fortune," says mum-of-two Kerri, 32. "I've got two children in primary school and even the cheapest supermarket uniform adds up when you need to buy a few pairs of trousers, a few polo shirts, a few jumpers - they’re filthy after one day, so you need plenty in the wardrobe." The School Uniform Grant is compulsory in Scotland where local authorities pay low income families at least … [Read more...] about Parents can get £150 to help cover school uniform costs as children return in England

Students too young, uninformed to choose high school courses, study says

Some Grade 8 students continue to be streamed into high school courses that close the door to university with little guidance or understanding about how their choices may affect their futures. That’s one of the troubling findings of a new report that captures the voices of youth and reveals how they end up choosing Grade 9 courses that have significant consequences down the road. Children barely in their teens are too young to make such important choices, and often do so without enough information or help from middle school staff who understand the implications, says the report, released Thursday by the research group Social Planning Toronto. “Without the maturity and support to fully grasp the weight of these decisions, some students are unknowingly following a path which inhibits them from reaching their full potential,” the report says. Among its findings: During middle school, youths and their parents didn’t understand the difference between courses in the “academic” … [Read more...] about Students too young, uninformed to choose high school courses, study says

Editorial: Colorado kids must get back to school and teachers need our support

More than 60 grief-stricken high school and middle school students wrote essays for The Denver Post about a school year that never materialized. While only three stories were published, all were thoughtful. We were struck by the students’ empathy and compassion. “When I reflect on the strict protocols, they weren’t actually a burden. Putting on my mask, connecting my headphones and logging into Google Meet to greet my immunocompromised teacher who was still working from home, oddly granted me normalcy in a day that was seemingly anything but normal,” wrote James Kerwin a student at Denver South High School about his first week back to school in-person at least part-time. We could all use more grace like that in these difficult times. Students need to be back in school full time and teachers need our support. The good news is that teacher vaccinations for COVID-19 are well-underway in most school districts. Colorado’s community transmission rates have plateaued at a moderate … [Read more...] about Editorial: Colorado kids must get back to school and teachers need our support

Ontario school boards to collect detailed data on hiring, suspensions

Ontario plans to revamp Grade 9 — with an eye to ending streaming in the first, “critical” year of high school — as part of its new equity plan that will also compel school boards to collect detailed data on everything from staff hires to student suspensions. Education Minister Mitzie Hunter said in an interview that what happens now in Grade 9 — where students are streamed into the more theoretical academic, or the more hands-on applied courses — is a concern because teens in applied classes are less likely to finish high school or go on to post-secondary education. “We talk about streaming as a really key aspect of our equity action plan, taking a fresh look at Grade 9,” Hunter said. “We know that Grade 9 is a critical year in terms of transition for students. We want to see Grade 9 as a year where students can explore their pathways and get excited about their pathways. We do not want it to be a year where students become demotivated and disengaged in school.” While … [Read more...] about Ontario school boards to collect detailed data on hiring, suspensions
