Government watchdog details severe trauma suffered by separated children
Migrant children separated from their parents through the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” policy experienced more severe mental trauma than children who were not separated, according to a government watchdog report. Separated children “exhibited more fear, feelings of abandonment, and post-traumatic stress” than children who were not separated, according to a report released Wednesday by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) inspector general. According to the report, some children did not understand why they were being separated and sometimes thought their parents had abandoned them. Mental health staff said some children expressed so much grief and confusion over the separation that they cried inconsolably. US Justice Department opens probe into Minneapolis policing practices following Chauvin conviction
WASHINGTON - The US Department of Justice on Wednesday opened a civil investigation into the Minneapolis Police Department's practices, one day after the conviction of former Minneapolis police offer Derek Chauvin for the death of George Floyd. Attorney General Merrick Garland said during a news conference that the aim of the investigation, which is separate from the federal criminal investigation into Floyd's death that has already been underway, is to assess whether the Minneapolis Police Department engages in a pattern or practice of using excessive force, including during protests. The just-announced investigation falls into the category known as "pattern-or-practice investigations," which the DOJ has said often examine "whether the police department has engaged in a pattern or practice of stops, searches, or arrests that violate the Fourth Amendment; use of excessive force; discriminatory policing; violation of the constitutional rights of criminal suspects; or violation of … [Read more...] about US Justice Department opens probe into Minneapolis policing practices following Chauvin conviction

The long-awaited report, which will be released Thursday, offers a sweeping — and sometimes scathing — look at the department. Its recommendations range from changing the culture to changing the style of underwear issued to inmates. The leadership deficit is so deep that consultants advise city officials to go outside the department to hire a new sheriff, according to the report, which was obtained by The Denver Post prior to its official release. DOCUMENT: Read the full report on the Denver Sheriff Department The report, produced by Hillard Heintze of Chicago and OIR Group of Los Angeles for $295,000, delivers 14 key findings and 277 recommendations for change. Mr Calver's appointment comes days after Fenwick reopened its stores to shoppers after spending much of the last year closed because of the pandemic. The business, which has a property portfolio worth hundreds of millions of pounds, is run by John Edgar, a former Harrods and Selfridges executive who was appointed to the chief executive's job last year. Fenwick, which opened its first store in Northumberland in 1882, has been attempting to grow its online business during the last 12 months of lockdown-affected sales.
