Chimpanzees in Context: Behavior, Cognition, and Welfare

Source: Vera Kratochvil, Public Domain Chimpanzees are one of our closest relatives and their lives are in peril because of human intrusions into their homes and lives. A new book edited by chimpanzee experts Drs. Lydia Hopper , Assistant Director of the Lester E. Fisher Center for the Study and Conservation of Apes , and Stephen Ross , Director of the Center, called Chimpanzees in Context: A Comparative Perspective on Chimpanzee Behavior, Cognition, Conservation, and Welfare is a comprehensive summary of what we know about these remarkable animals and provides information that is essential in developing conservation protocols. It's my pleasure to offer an interview with the editors of this forward-looking collection of essays by people who know the subject well. 1,2,3 Why did you compile the essays for Chimpanzees in Context ? Chimpanzees in Context is actually the latest in a series that has resulted from a set of conferences held in Chicago. In 1986, … [Read more...] about Chimpanzees in Context: Behavior, Cognition, and Welfare

Commentary: Storming of LegCo building a turning point in Hong Kong politics

SINGAPORE: The peaceful protest in Hong Kong that began on Sunday (Jun 30) has slid into anger and disobedience. Amid the unfolding outrage apparent in the storming of the Legislative Council Building, however, is an emerging consciousness of self-determination, something not usually seen in Hong Kongers. A CHANGED PEOPLE Hong Kong’s geographical location and historic particularity as a city under British rule for so long have been key strengths that have transformed it into a hub for international finance, and since its return to China in 1997, a door for the mainland to engage with the world. Hong Kongers have been known to be ruthlessly pragmatic people who prioritise stability, obedience to authority and indifference to each other’s business. The long colonial period has left Hong Kongers to become followers, a people who have stringently observed the law and left public policies largely to be meticulously worked out and implemented by administrative bureaucrats. … [Read more...] about Commentary: Storming of LegCo building a turning point in Hong Kong politics

Spider-Gwen no more, Gwen Stacy goes Batgirl this summer

Move over Spider-Gwen. Gwen Stacy is taking on a whole new superhero identity in Marvel's summer 2021 Heroes Reborn event, this time inspired by a different hero since Spider-Man doesn't exist in the story's reality. Instead of taking after Peter Parker (who is a kind of Jimmy Olsen-esque 'pal' for Hyperion , the Squadron Supreme/Heroes Reborn equivalent of Superman), she'll go all the way to the other end of the DC-pastiche spectrum as Night-Gwen, a sidekick for the Squadron's Batman equivalent Nighthawk, effectively making Gwen Stacy the Heroes Reborn 2021 universe’s equivalent of Batgirl, with a little bit bit of Harley Quinn thrown in for good measure. SyfyWire , who announced the one-shot by writer Vita Ayala and artist Farid Karami, describes the Heroes Reborn version of Gwen Stacy (Dr. Gwendolyn Stacy to you) as "Ravencroft Asylum's most prominent psychiatrist," who is hunting down a new arch-enemy named the Jackal as Nightbird (her actual codename). The Jackal is, … [Read more...] about Spider-Gwen no more, Gwen Stacy goes Batgirl this summer

PHUKET MEDIA WATCH – World news compiled by Gazette editors for Phuket’s international community Ferguson says returning Owen can help United push for the title Phuket Gazette / News Wires PHUKET: A fit-again Michael Owen could play a key role in Manchester United’s push for the Premier League title, according to manager Sir Alex Ferguson. The 32-year-old striker is on the verge of a return after five months out through injury. Ferguson believes the former England international can be an important member of the squad for the remaining seven matches. “If you think about ever needing a player to score an important goal for you, is there anyone better than Michael Owen?” Ferguson asked United’s official website. “He will be a really welcome addition to our squad, even if it were to be for the last few games of the season.” Ferguson revealed that Owen had been due to return sooner but suffered a set-back in training. “He came back into our training a couple of weeks … [Read more...] about Phuket Gazette: Owen’s return; F1 for Thailand; AFC champions

Ikea rushes to make up lost time on India expansion after delays

Furniture giant Ikea is accelerating its India expansion after a nationwide pandemic lockdown last year delayed the construction and opening of new stores in one of its fastest-growing markets. “If you have a lockdown you can’t continue to construct,” Peter Betzel, Ikea’s chief executive officer for India said in an interview. “But now we are back in full speed.” The company opened its second India store on the outskirts of Mumbai in December and another in the southern city of Bengaluru is now on course to be completed in 12 months, Betzel said, adding that he was hopeful of meeting the target of rolling out shops in 30 Indian cities within seven years. Ikea, which opened it’s first store in Hyderabad in 2018, also has just two years left to raise the ratio of goods and materials sourced from India -- currently at 22% -- to at least 30% to meet local regulations. Betzel said that was “absolutely” achievable. “It’s increasing as we speak,” he said. “But this is not … [Read more...] about Ikea rushes to make up lost time on India expansion after delays
